A lot of people get surprised when they find out I skip classes.
But my classmates are used to the skinny Asian girl who sits in the front of class either drooling or doodling. In my grade reports, every teacher marked down with exasperated exclamation points, “This girl is always building castles in the air!” I used to have a Spanish teacher who hated my guts because I slept every minute of her class. And I always finish my homework during classes so that I didn’t have to do them back at home. You all remember my 7pm rule? It’s not so much a wise strategy as it is just an excuse to slack off some more.
I have to admit, I used to have tons of fun seeing my teachers pinched expressions and exasperation. I was sloppy with my work attitude, but I still somehow managed to get good grades, so I really did not give a damn.
Until I realized how much that sloppy attitude is costing me.
Let me just name a few recent or major ones:
- I scratched up my car really badly against the parking wall because I didn’t care to look properly.
- I crushed the back of my car for the same reason.
- Look above, re-read two times. Yes, 6 times total, until the final accident (which was, of course, totally my fault again)
- I messed up on the date for my parents’ plane flight to Los Angeles, at a loss of $800.
- I messed up again on the date, this time for a bus trip.
- I didn’t read the directions to my mid-term, and wrote about two films instead of three.
- I didn’t read the directions to my essay prompt, and wrote about my own topic.
- I didn’t check up on school email account, even though I knew something was wrong with it, and missed several important information from my professors
Ouch. I think I’ve had enough, don’t you? It’s hard, to shake off this sloppy attitude which I’ve been wearing for so many years. But the price to pay is too much, too painful. I’ve lost and wasted too much money, time, and grades.
Urgh. It seems like I’m always bordering in the extremity. During my ED days, I’m obsessing over the smallest details in my calorie intake and meals. Now, I’ve lost that perfectionist behavior, but I seem to have reverted back to my sloppy, half-assed ways. How do I find that balance? I’m still working on it, but I’ll let you know.
So. To reflect on my sloppy attitude, let me present to you a sloppy dish. Nope, not sloppy joes. That would be unoriginal!
Korean BBQ Chickpea Gratin
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 large onion, diced
- 4 oz ground turkey
- 1/2 zucchini, diced
- 1/2 eggplant, diced
- 1/4 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup chickpeas, cooked (I stole this from the school dining hall)
- Korean BBQ marinade
- 2-3 basil leaves, shredded
- 1 medium gold potato
- 1 medium sweet potato
- 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
- fresh black pepper
Fry up the garlic and onion in oil until fragrant, then toss in the ground turkey and all the vegetables. Cook until softened, and then add in the chickpeas and Korean BBQ marinade:
Once heated through, pour the vegetable mixture into a baking dish. Top with basil leaves:
Slice the potato and sweet potato into about 1/4-inch slices:
Place it in overlapping patterns over the baking dish and sprinkle with cheese and cracked black pepper:
Cook in a 400 degree oven until done:
You can definitely guess my reaction to this toasty cheesy dish as I pulled it out of the oven!
How can you say no to toasted cheeeeeese?!
Slop it up onto a dish:
No matter how you look at it, it definitely looks sloppy…
But oh-so-delicious! I swear, that Korean BBQ marinade is the bomb, and it will make even my running shoes taste delicious. It’s best with meat, of course, but plenty tasty with vegetarian options like this one!
But I have to say, the best part was the crispy texture of the 2-potato crust…So crunchy, so cheesy!
Obviously this little dish is just for show, because right after I finished this portion, I finished up the rest by the baking dish:
Yum.
Too bad my sloppiness doesn’t produce such delicious results!
By the way, I’ll be gone this weekend…To SAN FRANCISCO! I’ll be hitching at Maggie from Say Yes to Salad’s place together with Coco from Balance, Joy and Delicias for the Foodbuzz Festival….AHH! So excited!! I can’t believe I’m finally meeting so many amazing bloggers!!! >.<
But not to worry (Ok, I’m the only one worrying)…Mimi will be doing a guest post, so please check back in the weekend for that!
Question of the day: So, what kind of work ethic do you have? Are you a diligent bee? Or a sloppy dreamer like me?

Ouch, the car and plane ticket hurts.
It’s an easy but bad habit to get into because a lot of people start to make compromises. Lots of people in my class started to skip 1 class but that turned into 2, 3 and sometimes they don’t even come now.
Unfortunately I can’t do the 7pm rule (although I’d like to) but I tend to steer off course from time to time. To for example blog or watch tv

So lucky you’re going to Foodbuzz!!! I tend to have a sloppy attitude, too…

Maybe you’re not actually a “sloppy dreamer.” Maybe you’re just not getting enough sleep? Seriously. That may be the culprit.
Meantime, that cheesy potato crust is pure heaven. I’d pick off the entire top and eat it first. But that’s just me.

while searching for balance…keep in mind that “sloppy” is WAY BETTER than ed.

i agree that k bbq sauce would make a shoe taste good. i don’t think i’m sloppy…but i’m not very focused…i start off strong and then lose interest in work and start making little mistakes.

That dish looks wonderful! As for studying, it may help if you call some of your classmates to make sure that you have all the details for a project right. That used to help me a lot, although you can’t do it during a test! lol

Ack! I’ve had some stupid car mistakes, myself. I semi-sideswiped the front of my dad’s old car. I also had to help my brother get it “unstuck” from when he drove it across the lawn, and we decided the best way to do this would be to push w/ my car – which was taller and caved in his bumper. I also semi-sidewiped my mom’s car – the mark’s still there! And last summer I totally and completely backed into a Tbone w/ a parked car and caved in his door and ripped off his mirror. Luckily I just cracked my tail light.
And you already know about my current school follies – ugh.
So, while I’d like to say that I strive to be an organized perfectionist, I guess I’m just sloppy and half-assed as well!
I don’t think it counts as “stealing” the chickpeas if you having a dining plan, right?!
I love this dish! The bottom looks like a wonderful ratatoille and I love the combo of both white and sweet potatoes! Great idea! Mmm cheesy goodness – it always tastes better when it gets that brown crust.
Christina // November 6, 2009 at 1:55 am |
Oh man, I just remembered another car mistake – I was too far to the side of the garage as I was pulling in and slammed my mirror into the side. The mirror flipped back, but there’s a black mark on the side of the door frame. hehe
Luckily all of my driving mistakes are stupid small things, and I never have gotten in any major accidents or any tickets on the actual road!! It really does sound bad now that I count them all up, though!

Korean Bbq marinade looks colourful.
I never crashed my car neither the bike.
I beleive I am the biggest racer in this world and vehicles are operated through my brain.
If you were here in Cochin you could have spotted me easily. The boy seen on a smashing airy bike who comes like wind and passes away. These are not my wordings but the people who watch it.
I also have made my parents waste money but that was during my childhood. Yes I am also a child now… mm…ok a grown child
I did not understand why you call it a sloppy dish?

Oooh melted cheese how I love thee! I’m a bit of a Bree Van Der Kamp when it comes to tasks. Sad but true!

oohhh!! so much vege!! I love this!! *copying recipe* Hehehe…
Myself’s a slop too! And I wrecked my car 6 times this year alone! Addin salt to the injury was I didnt have very stable income til recently. Imagine all that repairs!
There was one time I tried to de-frost my ice compartment, and instead of hittin the defrst button, (cos i didnt want my ice cream, yogurt etc to thaw) and I used a hammer to chunk awy at the ice crusted ard the comaprtment.
One particular stubborn one i had to use a screwdriver.
(imagine using a hammer and a srewdriver – like chiselling awy/sculpting ice)
I thot i was pretty smart.
Then the next few days the ice compartment never maanged to freeze.
Good god…
Not only that, the whole fridge is warm!!
After sweating ,cursin switching on and off the power for days (ironically I had to throw awy all my precious ice cream, BREAD!!!, yogurt and cheese etc)
I gave up adn called for an electrician.
Sigh..hundreds of ringgit wen t dwn the drain.
apparently my shrp screwdriver cut a hole in the freezer wall and the compressed gas cant cool the fridge.
so there..sloppy careless silly me.
So last year, like i told u many times was when my sloppy attitude hurts the most.
Apparently nx year is better for me. u knw laa all those horoscope readings.
Whtever it is, after last yr, i am so much more detailed, careful and aware of my surroudings as well as I take more time to plan nowadays.
oh did i tell u how much interest/$ i lost cos i forgot to pay my credit card bills on time??
ahhaha..i could go on!! But yeah..u get the drift *wink*

Lovely sloppy dish.
Well, I am more or less sloppy. About school sometimes, usually about cleaning my apartment
I get good grades, but if I wasn’t sloppy as I am, maybe they would be even better.

Well…now that you mention it, I kind of notice that sloppy tendency in myself. Honestly, I care so much about running and my sorority, that a lot of times, that 15 page research paper gets pushed to the back of my worries…Probably not the best idea, haha.
Have a great weekend
Melinda // November 6, 2009 at 8:51 am |
That gratin looks good and I think maybe I will try something similar using soy crumbles in place of the turkey. Just picked up some chick peas yesterday and was debating what to do with them.
I can tell you once I was recovering I did get sloppy too and then I heard about that from everyone also, like I was never perfect. So the key is to find a balance, but I think you know that already.
I will say I am still very much OCD and I have a no procrastination additude. Actually it is bad and sometimes backfires as I do more work than needed since things get cancelled and I have already done them. I do things so early that instructions get changed, but I really can’t help myself. As a result I do not take any excuse from my students that involves procrastination, such as getting sick the day an assignment is due and asking for an extension, well in all honestly I want to know why they would wait until the last possible second when they had 7 days to do it. Yes, I know many people do procrastinate, but since I don’t, never have and never will, it drives me insane. So, thanks for letting me vent a little!
I guess I’ll say it one more time, balance and moderation are key in everything that you do.

Ah, the balance of just the right amount of diligence is so hard to achieve… I’m still working on that one…
I tend to be a hyper-perfectionist, which isn’t such a good approach… :-p
Spotty Prep // November 6, 2009 at 8:58 am |
I’m definitely making this!!!
I tend to have a decent work ethic, but a super short attention span. And if the professor/boss/subject matter annoyed me in any way, forget about it- I would put in a B amount of effort at best. I am detail oriented and have a good memory, though, so I make do
Interesting topic!

oh god sophia- i am the exact same way- at least thats how i grew up! my family is a bunch of flakes and we have done everything from go to the airport on the wrong day.. to go to the WRONG airport at the right time (yea that stunk!) to leaving kids behind at gast stations on family trips.. to locking the keys in the car in a thunderstorm. to spending my entire middle school career in detention for being late everyday because my mom drove us.
UM YEA that turned me into a paranoid time freak now!!!! i get sweaty, nervous and anxious when i am running late or have to get a big task done..
BUT i still miss things by not paying attention! how is that possible?!! I was the same way in school too- i was ranked 20 in my class, had a 3.9 and i slept thru every class i had. lol
heres hoping that things turn around for you! i say get a buddy who is obsessive with time management and studying to help kick you in the butt! : )
that food looks awesome.. SOOOOOO awesome!

I was that way during high school, and even into my freshman year of college. I could almost sleep through the classes, and get A’s. But, then I had a big awakening when I realized how different college was. Now, I am about to finish up Grad school, and am very diligent, and work hard for my grades. I know this is totally cliche, but if I had known my freshman year, what I know now, I’m sure I could have graduated with honors… oh well… Cest la vie. No?

I’m a diligent bee when it comes to school and work, but a sloppy dreamer when it comes to life in general. Does that make sense? I am a hard worker and I care about making an impression and doing well, but living life I just do my own thing, an dI don’t care what people think about me. I just live.

I went through my fair share of things like this when I was about 17 or 18. I messed up my car a LOT through carelessness and just didn’t really pay attention to important stuff. I think we all grow to realise that this doesn’t pay off! I had to pull my socks up and sort myself out. I think having a full time job, an apartment and no parents to support me and fall back on anymore helped me personally to stop. But deep down I am still such a dreamer and it’s an effort for me to do the stuff I’m meant to!
Sloppy yumness, lady. That dish looks crazy good!

I tend to be too much of a perfectionist, to think about things obsessively, to show OCD tendencies in double and triple checking everything from the corners of my car while driving, to spelling in college papers. I’ve been trying to be less rigid in most things for a while now.
Have a blast in San Fran! I am so jealous of all the food bloggers that get to go!!
luckytastebuds // November 6, 2009 at 12:15 pm |
I know what you mean…my brother is the same way and I worry SO SO SO much about him. It’s always the little things that he misses that result in big consequences that you sometimes wanna kick yourself for. I KNOW that it can be helped though, and all it is is paying more attention to details. Nobody is perfect and everybody will get something wrong sometime, so don’t kick yourself over it. The thing is to go forward that knowledge of your tendencies and try to make that NOT the norm anymore. You can do it sophia. You’re so meticulous when it comes to food, i just know it’s in you! It just takes a lot of effort to TRY extra hard sometimes.
I’m one of those meticulous types, but I’ve had my share of blunders. (missing an international flight thinking it was at 12 in the morning when it was midnight). hahah NOT good.

Being sloppy in college can cost you a lot more than being sloppy in high school. Generally, professors mean business, not to mention that blatantly disregarding them (doing homework in class, if they can see you) kind of seems like a slap in the face. (They’ve devoted their lives to these subjects, they least you can do is pay attention.)
Sorry to be frank, but if I catch a student disrespecting me in my class next year, heads will roll.

If I’m in a perfectionist moood, I tend to try and be super organized with everything in my life, from washing my face at night, to planning my outfit and meals ahead of time, and doing well in school.
When I’m a lazy ass. I’m a lazy ass to the extremeee. Balance is a toughie.
But this meal looks gorgeous! And so yummy too, I bet.
Susan // November 6, 2009 at 5:13 pm |
I wouldn’t say I’m sloppy, maybe more “negligent.” And it’s not that I purposely ignore things, it’s just that what should be important, usually isn’t at the forefront of my mind. Even little things like not noticing I dropped something on the floor, and walking past it a bazillion times without ever picking it up. Hm. Maybe I’m just preoccupied!
Oh, ramblings aside, that dish is the BOMB. I wonder if I could track down some Korean BBQ sauce…

Oh dear, sounds like a lot of stuff was sloppy lately–but at least you recognize it! Some people are so ignorant to their own sloppy ways!!
So envious of you going to Foodbuzz–lucky gal!

I’ll tell ya… finding a balance is all of what life’s about. Probably for now, the sloppiness is better than perfectionism, but maybe it’s time to re-read or get more sleep?

Oh my goodness, veggies, squash, cheese, and chickpeas??? YUM! Why are you such a food genius, Sophia?!
I think I’m naturally a sloppy person, but became careful throughout life. I check to see I got my homework in my backpack over and over again, make sure that I don’t run into anything while driving, check the time to make sure I’m never late, and I recheck my answers on test countlessly. Maybe I should be a little more flexible?
I hope you have fun at the Foodbuzz thing! Sounds like you are having fun so far (from other blogs
)

Eeep, I’m ashamed to say I as well struggle with following directions and managing good work habits! I find it’s always good to reread things and write them down (ha, in my case, even if it has come down to write on my arm xD).

You can keep building castles in the air all you want as far as I’m concerned if you keep coming up with such yummy creative recipes.

So jealous of you being at Foodbuzz!
I have a pretty good work ethic, but the minute you started describing yourself, I thought of my brother. He was similar in high school – daydreamin’ and sleepin’ but getting good grades so he could have cared less!

Your post made me smile – and laugh. I’m a bit of an extremist. It’s either one way or completely the other. So I can relate to what you’re saying!
