Sanity Tips from a Grouch

October 24, 2009 · 99 Comments

“Are we there yet?”

That is the question uttered wearily by every student during this point at the semester. Go on, ask one. They’ll turn to you with bleary eyes and caffeinated jitters, and repeat that same question.

Mid-terms has just past, like a great typhoon of late-night studying and flurry of readings and scribblings. The tide has drawn, but you never know when it’ll flood back with a storm of new papers and exams.

Boy, college is tough. But I’m not here to bitch. I’m here to share a few of my secrets on how to stay sane in the midst of all the stress and craziness.

Here are a few of my own personal guidelines (some I break, some I uphold like a religious commandment):

Sophia’s Ways to Maintain Sanity in College

  • The 7pm Rule: Never open a textbook or study or do anything academic-related after 7pm. Once the clock reads 7:00 pm, I close up my notebooks, and relax.
(This is my favorite rule. I stick to it no matter what. Even during mid-terms. Which is why you could see my blogging when I have mid-terms the next day)
  • The Morning Coffee: I always try to wake up about at least an hour and a half earlier than my first class, so that I can go out for a run, come back home, fix breakfast, drink my fresh-brewed coffee.
(This sets me off for a good day. It is never a good idea to rush off to class right out of bed, because you’re just not in the right mentality to pay attention in class. Might as well sleep in. Also, without coffee, I’m a total…bitch)
  • Be smart-selective with readings: I don’t read everything that my professor assigns. Some are just plain unnecessary! Figure out what the professor wants, and emphasizes on, and focus on that.
(I’m still trying to get the hang of this)
  • Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy: No matter what I do, even a 10-page research paper (groan!), I try my best to make it enjoyable. It’s not a matter of hypnotizing or forcing yourself to “enjoy” it, but a matter of changing your attitude about that assignment. Try to find some aspects of it that may interest you. If you stay positive, your time spent will be much more productive and effective.
(True story. I experience this all the time)
  • Start on your assignment ASAP: Don’t ever procrastinate. It can do you no good.
(I actually start on my assignments the day I get them. While my classmates are struggling to finish their essays, I have mine done 2 days ahead of time. Love the breathing space!)
  • Eat well: Duh. Like I needed to even tell you this!
(But not if you have a mandated partial meal plan. Like I do. Scroll down, and let me explain)

Unfortunately, I still have 43 meals left to choke down in my school dining hall. Damn it. It’s already past half the semester, and I’ve only dined there for a total of 7 meals. And I’m already so, so, so sick of all the food there. Confused

I have, however, found the dining cafeteria a good place to study:
IMG_0845 They have internet access and power cords for my laptop, so I just hitch my Macbook up and take advantage of the unlimited drinks and snacks.

Like say, granola in a bit of milk, with chunks of chocolate:
IMG_0794 Warmed up in the microwave, the chocolate melts into the mixture, and the granola gets sort of chewy…
IMG_0793 Not bad, but it was too sweet. The first bowl was good. But after my second bowl, I thought I was going to puke.Sick

So another time, I decided to do brunch, since how can anyone mess up brunch food, right?

Wrong.

Check this out:
IMG_0786 Salad, fruit, turkey sausage, frittata, and omelet. With diet coke.

Salad is fine. Fruit is okay. Turkey sausage is blah. Frittata is blah. Omelet is waaaaay under-seasoned.
IMG_0788 How the hell does one mess up an omelet? Is this some crazy low-sodium rule that the school has? And where is the cheese I ordered? No cheese makes Sophia a very, very unhappy grouch. At wits end

Disappointed, I just filled up on frittata:
IMG_0787 …And more frittata:
IMG_0791 And more frittata, with another sausage patty:
IMG_0789 And yet more frittata, with yet another patty:
IMG_0790I used the same plate for the omelet, so it’s still there, cold and rejected.

It’s something about the fact that this lackluster meal cost me $11 that makes me stuff myself to the brim with lackluster food. Does this make sense? That in order to get my money’s worth, I feel the need to fill myself up to the gills! Sarcastic

Poor Mimi. During our weekly Thursday meet-ups, I sometimes have to drag her to dine at the cafeteria. And they’ve been consistently bad. But we managed to find a few items that were actually edible.

Vegetarian Shepherd’s pie that was all potatoes and no filling:
IMG_0904 Some kind of Indian-spiced vegetable medley that was actually pretty good minus all the grease:
IMG_0903 Mango-Chutney Chicken salad with tzatziki sauce:
IMG_0906 Some kind of beef curry that was tough, stringy, and spat out:
IMG_0907Boring egg salad and tuna salad
IMG_0905 These totally needed hot sauce. And lots of it.

On the brighter hand, I found out that Fridays was Asian-themed. Despite my ambivalence, the food wasn’t too bad:
IMG_0911 Asian sweet-and-sour rice noodle salad, cheese pizza, tzatziki sauce.

And second plate:
IMG_0912 Pepperoni & Sausage pizza, lemongrass mashed potatoes, green curry with shrimp and white rice

There was not a hint of lemongrass in that mashed potatoes, so I suspect they just threw that in there to sound fancy and go along with the Asian-theme. The green curry was pretty good, though.

So far, a lot of misses and a few acceptables. And I have 43 more rounds to go. God. Damn. It. I tried to swipe my friend in for a free meal, but they wouldn’t let me because I only have a partial meal plan.

Huh?! I’ve never heard such complete bullshit in my life! Phbbbttt

To think my brother goes to Virginia-Tech, the school with one of the best on-campus dining, complete with lobsters and wood-grilled pizzas. Next time he complains about the food, I shall smack him and make him eat ours.

Wow. How did this post turn out to be so negative? Sorry, I promised not to bitch, but as I said, bad food makes me grouchy! Embarrassed

I’ll be back to my more chipper self by the next post. I promise! Batting Eyelashes

Question of the Day: Remember my 7 pm rule? What about you? Are you a late-worker? A procrastinator?
And any tips for me to enjoy school dining food more?

When I was new to college (fresh outta high school) I was the world best procrastinator! I would wait until right before class to finish assignments. I studied the night before and morning of an exam, never earlier. But now, I can’t procrastinat because I have no spare time to do homework and study. I know if I don’t get my “work” done during the time I have, I won’t have another chance to do it.

Dang, you are one speed demon in the morning! I wake up 1 1/2 hours early just to drink my coffee, read blogs, and relax. No run included! And um while I truly like your 7-pm rule, if I did that, I’d fail all my classes! Nooo way. I am the world biggest procrastinator.

Ick, I don’t miss the cafeteria. I lived on gardenburgers, salad bar, cereal and build your own stirfry!

Sometimes I study after 7, but I know that it doesn’t make any sense. I can’t study when I’m tired, and in the evening, I just want to cuddle and watch tv shows with my boy. I definitely follow that morning coffee rule. I can’t function well without my morning routine: a cup of coffee, nice bowl of oats or some other kick-ass breakfast, and connection to the internet :)

I’s always worked best a night. I feel that’s when I get my best writing done. It’s just how it works for me. I think it’s because it’s quiet and everyone else is fast asleep. No noise around me to distract from my concentration. Though, I do have the tv or music on in the background. I can actually get some work done. I’ll work during the day, too. Procrastination is a sort of problem for me, too. It’s one thing I have to work on. But I have gotten better from several years before. I’d always procrastinate up to the last minute especially in college and yet I still managed to graduate with honors. lol. Go figure. Me and my lazy butt.

Tips for college dining food…nothing comes to mind at the moment.

I love the 7pm rule, I’ll have to try that! I used to be a ridiculous procrastinator, but with this return to school I’m trying to stop it!!! I “trick” myself that the due-date is really 2 or 3 days ahead of what it really is. So I might still procrastinate, but really I’ve tricked myself into getting it done early.

haha Love the “asian” lunches with the cheese and pepperoni pizza!! Sorry it sucks so badly! Could you bring your own hot sauce and try to salvage some!?? At least you know for future semesters, right????

  • laurasworthlesswords // October 24, 2009 at 2:55 am | Reply

Great rule, very good ones, I like the fact you put your books down and relax thats something thats really important.

Lol sorry the food isnt great maybe you`ll just have to rely on some extra sauce to get through them! Is their somewhere you can put in a comment or suggestion? I suppose though they probably get hundreds already!

I pressed publish, and when I went to read blogs in my reader I saw your question! It all depends for me. For some reason recently I have been procrastinating, but it’s not always like that. I do have an excuse though – I shouldn’t be studying while my dad is visiting!

  • Aisha // October 24, 2009 at 5:33 am | Reply

The food at my uni cafe is equally or even more disgusting and costs about the same.
Please be happy, you are great *HUGS*
I always do all my studying after 7pm, but if you say it is easier to relax if you don’t I will try to not do it so much. I’m also a procrasinator and get the work finished 5 minutes before it is due in.

  • Palidor // October 24, 2009 at 7:44 am | Reply

Those are some good rules you got there. Sorry to hear (and see) that the cafe food sucks! I’m lucky to have never partaken in a cafeteria meal plan, but I’ve heard horror stories about how bad the food sucks.

  • Lauren // October 24, 2009 at 7:52 am | Reply

I love your rules for maintaining sanity! Especially the first. Its so important to remember to take breaks every single day.

I used to have such a hard time using all my food points too! I wasnt a fan of the dining hall fare and usually just stuck with the cereal, ice cream and salad bar. Those were always safe bets.

    Have a great weekend love!

Have a wonderful weekend! Tysons Corner is the best mall!!! Cool that you used to live close!

I really like your rules girl~~ I basically use them all when I go to school, specially the 7 pm one, I’m a morning person and whenever I work later than 7PM I can’t sleep well that night and my productivity for the next goes down.
I’ve never eaten in a dining hall, I can’t imagine doing that…. just need my own kitchen!
hey~~~ do you have a case for mac that is pink? wooo…. I need one of this. seems so cute!!! :)

  • Jessica // October 24, 2009 at 8:09 am | Reply

I love your ‘7 pm’ rule. That is such a great tip! When I was in college that time was my favorite to relax, but unfortunately I usually procratinated and had to do work or study. I have always been a morning person, but now see the benefit in getting anything I need done early in the day. :)

  • julia // October 24, 2009 at 8:16 am | Reply

Loving the rules and I can relate to so many, it’s almost scary!;)
And poor you with that food. I have to admit that I love the way you describe those eats, so at least they’re good for something (making Julia laugh)!
And that mac case: where can i find that? Love it!

Hope you have a great weekend!

I am more on the 5 PM rule ;)

My dining hall sucks too. We were required to order a meal plan Freshman year and that was the only year I have had one. I would much rather cook in my own kitchen any day!

  • Mica // October 24, 2009 at 8:43 am | Reply

    Hm…maybe the 7pm rule works for undergrads…

I don’t think I’m a huge procrastinator, but I definitely can’t get by stopping my work that early.

Dining hall food, yeah, I don’t miss that!

  • traynharder23 // October 24, 2009 at 9:02 am | Reply

i wish i had had those rules when i was still in UCLA- i like the nothing after 7 pm. i think i did the nothing after 8.

i dunno- i woke up early to get in a run before work at 6:15 (left house at 5:40) so i got used to it. now i just freakin’ get up way too early.
you can’t swipe friends like ME in ?! LAME!

  • The Candid RD // October 24, 2009 at 9:02 am | Reply

Your tips are right on target! They sound just like my own college day tips. I always woke up before my roommates because they would sleep in until the last second, but I had to be sure to have cereal and coffee! I also NEVER procrastinate, because I don’t work well under pressure.
Regarding your extra money on your card, can you use it at a marketplace or something? Whenever I had extra meals/money, I always went to the marketplace and just bought bars and snacks. Is that an option?

Thanks for your comment on my blog. I’m glad I was missed, as I missed all of you too! Thanks to my stupid computer…stupid stupid stupid! No, stupid ME for not backing it up :(

  • Nancy // October 24, 2009 at 9:04 am | Reply

Those are really good rules and I’ll definately remember them when I go to uni next year. I’m so nervous!

  • leianna // October 24, 2009 at 9:37 am | Reply

My school dining was like that too, crap!
Do they make sandwiches or can you take away things, at ours you can take a box and fill it to leave, and make you own stuff out of it at home?
I’m a procrastinator, wasn’t really in school, but am now, scared to go back to school next semester and see what I do!

  • Sean // October 24, 2009 at 9:44 am | Reply

Yeah…that 7pm rule doesn’t apply to us professional students. I wish I could apply it!

UGA is known (supposedly) nationwide for their food but their cafeteria food is awful. Overcooked, greasy, broil-everything food that’s subpar. Of course if you have no idea (or don’t care) about what you’re eating then people love it. For me? Pass.

  • Rachel // October 24, 2009 at 9:56 am | Reply

Sophia, I’m copying down those rules:) And I am definitely following them! Though, of course, getting me to put down my notes after 7 might be a bit hard…

Sorry I can’t help you with the cafeteria food:( Maybe you could write in? Or just stick to turning the campus inside out for yummier, more palatable food? :) Sniff the good food out!

  • Anna // October 24, 2009 at 10:13 am | Reply

I am shocked and amazed by your 7 pm rule. In a perfect world with classes only happening between 10 and 2 and no extra curriculars, I could see this being feasible, but with sometimes 5 classes a day with one being at 7:30 pm, IM and club sports teams, and random meetings to mess up my life, most of my work doesn’t start until well after 7 pm. You’re really lucky that you are able to do this. Enjoy it while you can!

And I’ve been off the meal plan ever since freshman year. It’s gross, overpriced, and has next to nothing for vegans. I happily brown bag it to save some dough, although I did find a $4 all you can eat salad bar with 3 different types of beans that has made me pretty happy.

  • Christina // October 24, 2009 at 11:05 am | Reply

I love your rules. The selective reading one is SO important. There’s no way I would have been able to read everything assigned. For some classes I had, even buying the textbook at all turned out to be a waste. I can’t say I followed the 5th rule though… I’m a huge procrastinator :)

  • Rebeca // October 24, 2009 at 11:41 am | Reply

    1. I love your sanity tips… too bad I don’t get home till 7 and I’m not sure I could swing that :) I don’t get my work done as early as I’d like but that’s a symptom of working too much, not personal habits :)

    2. That sucks with the food… USC needs to remedy ASAP!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) // October 24, 2009 at 11:54 am | Reply

Holy crap – I broke pretty much all of those rules! I studied right up until bedtime (even in bed) and I procrastinated all the time. Fortunately it worked out well for me … but I definitely didn’t enjoy it.

  • Kathleen // October 24, 2009 at 1:08 pm | Reply

I love your rules! And noooo, I’m really bad at procrastinating at ANYTHING, which I guess is a good thing.
Also, yeah…I’m total bitch without coffee too, so no worries :)

  • eatingmachine // October 24, 2009 at 1:16 pm | Reply

dude, you think your school’s food is bad, you should’ve seen mine… people thought i was a vegetarian because the meat was just too sketchy to eat (i had chicken that was simultaneously pink and grey once)
i recommend stealing lots of salad bar veggies to take home to cook with-i would load up my backpack… might not really get your money’s worth but at least it saves on groceries.

  • Lorraine @NotQuiteNigella // October 24, 2009 at 1:18 pm | Reply

Sophia, that cafeteria food sounds and looks woeful! I;m chuckling a bit at the asian themness of the last dish, a sausage and pepperoni pizza just screams asian doesn’t it! No? Ok then let me throw in some lemongrass potatoes then :P

  • traveleatlove // October 24, 2009 at 1:39 pm | Reply

I love the no work after 7 rule, but when I was in college, I often had classes that went until 10 pm because of working during the day! So I would have gotten very poor attendance in those :)
Bleh dining hall. It made me cry more than once.

  • greensandjeans // October 24, 2009 at 1:42 pm | Reply

I’ve always been a morning person, so when I was in college I would get all my studying in before most of my friends were even awake! I was also pretty lucky because our dining hall was pretty decent. They had a whole section with healthy/vegetarian options, a pretty stellar salad bar, and the best omelet bar EVER (the guy in charge had one arm and he made omelets way faster than anyone else I have ever seen). I think you have to approach the dining hall as a big grocery store and be willing to go to different sections of it to make some really good creations.

  • Susan // October 24, 2009 at 1:48 pm | Reply

Yeah, the cafeteria at my old school was aaaawful. My recommendation would be to bring some of your own ingredients. Ie, your own cheese to add, your own hot sauce, extras to add to salads. My school had a pathetic salad bar, so I’d load up on what I could there, then go around to the different stalls asking for chicken breast at the wrap stand, or steamed veggies at the Asian stand. By the end of it, I’d get a decent and filling meal :)

Love your rules too!! I like the 7pm one. I had a lot of evening classes though, and I’m horribly unproductive in the daytime!

  • Clay // October 24, 2009 at 1:55 pm | Reply

I had the rule to reward yourself after an all nighter. I know after i finished my biggest paper of my last year i took myself out for some banana pancakes and eggs. Granted, i dont think i enjoyed them as much as i normally would… i was kind of on autopilot.

So, rewarding yourself is a good thing.
Also, as per the meal situation. I would think they have things like granola bars and fruit? I remember i would stock up on those and even ask the staff for some plain chicken breast and fish filets when they would have them there, then prepare them my way at home.

  • Jen // October 24, 2009 at 2:38 pm | Reply

first of all, all of that food, YUMMM!

second, I think you should READ EVERYTHING because then you have a better way of weeding out what you like and do not like, and learning more, you might find something unexpected in what you though you did not like. I think you should try everything once, no? It is good to know both sides in order to know where YOU stand. :)

third, you have a pink laptop? how cute!

And I too always adhere to the 7pm rule. My brain shuts down at around then and if I keep on working late at night, it’s usually just bad quality stuff that I turn out.

  • Hummingbird Appetite // October 24, 2009 at 4:48 pm | Reply

I remember when I was a freshman in college, I got a meal plan for 6-7 days a week. I didn’t go to the dining room that often. The next semester, I downgraded my meal plan.

I hate mediocre food, too. But when you’re frantically studying or writing a paper, you need food whether it’s lackluster or not. If going to the cafeteria saves you money, then that’s what you need to do.

  • Figtreeapps // October 24, 2009 at 5:36 pm | Reply

The food at my college was sooo bad. The only good thing was on Sunday mornings they had a lady that made eggs to order, the rest was pure CRAP. After 3 Sundays I was sick of the eggs. I remember many meals of mac n cheese made in my room with my little cooker and kit kat bars .I always felt guilty as my mom paid so much for the meal plan :(

It seems like your dining hall has ethnic food days like mine did- I found those were the best. The Cuban theme was my favorite- the black bean soup was actually really, really good. (I still remember it 7 years later!) If that’s the case, I recommend going for lunch and dinner on those days to get the most out of your money!

They also did well on holidays- for Valentines Day they had a ton of chocolate desserts that were pretty good….

Remember my 7 pm rule? What about you? Are you a late-worker? A procrastinator?
And any tips for me to enjoy school dining food more?

That 7pm rule should apply for workin ppl as well i tell u!

I was the worse type of procrastinator bk when I was in high school n college. Must say my grades did suffer for it ;)
It took me years to discipline myself, and a lot of horrid, stressed & disastrous experiences.
Now I’m more “scheduled” n do manage to get things done on time! Haha!

As for the dining hall food, how abt carrying a tupperware, and salt n pepper little shaker w u?
Salt n pepper for extra seasonin whn u dine there (or each time u dine there, ask for salt n pepper bottle frm the cafeteria..nt sure if they got?)

Tupperware for takin back the food, then re-modify them to your liking!
eg: mince the taste patty n create a new dish!

It may be weird if anyone sees u. But heck, whn I’m stuck at the hawker stall with a bowl of horrible noodles, i jz get up, ask for them to pack it up n I went home, added sauce/egg/seasonin/etc to make it palatable.
Sounds like more work, but hey i paid for the food n I’m no rich girl! ;p
Likewise for chic rice with tough chic,
the chic is minced and mixed into a salad/becomes chic sandwich filling, the rice separately eaten with veg/egg/meat bought frm econ rice stall.

Jz somethin tht i do ;) , aft all, its free n u hv 43 more to go!
Think of all the great new recipes tht u can come up with! U definitely hit some interestin inspirational ones, cos whn human are faced w no options & gt to come up w somethin, the brain is a miraculous/surprising tool whn u push it to work! ;p

I love your 7pm rule, but unfortunately, I can’t follow it. I’m at school all day doing labs, office hours, and going to lectures, then once I’m home it’s dinnertime (I commute for a while). That leaves no time for homework, so I have to study at night >.< I love your do not read all rule too. I'm slowly learning to make use of that after years and years of over-reading/studying.

I am definitely the opposite of a procrastinator. I start assignments the day I get them or the day after, and I try to do as much work as possible on the weekends as well.

Try to pack your own seasoning or spices in little containers and add them to your foods. Or take the food back up to your dorm/house so that you can add cheese, hot sauce, or something else and re-cook it!

  • ellie // October 24, 2009 at 7:40 pm | Reply

I love your tips! Having a cut-off point is the hardest thing for me- I feel like if I am awake, I should be being productive. I’m not in school anymore, but it was my biggest downfall and contributed big-time to my burn-out (CRASH AND BURN!) Lol.

    K. The omelettes? You think brunch food is hard to screw up? Anytime you want to come try the eggs at my apartment, feel free. Suddenly your college food will seem gourmet! Seriosuly…eggs are one thing I’ll never be able to cook properly. Ketchup works wonders for bad food by the way.

I am far from a procrastinator- I am usually way ahead of deadlines which sounds good in theory, but it leaves time for me to panic, go back, rock out my perfectionist side…it’s not unheard of for me to wait until 3 hours before the deadline and tear up entire essays and start over, rushing in at the very last second to submit a piece of work that is completely unedited/not proofread/a mess. Pacing and balance are not my strong points :P

Dorm food- hit up the ‘plain’ things that they can’t screw up. Plain pasta, potatoes, rice (you hate rice though, right?) Then hit the salad bar- cheese, chicken, eggs, veggies. Then look to condiments…tzatziki, rice, grilled chicken and salad might all come from different parts of the cafeteria, but combined make a great meal. Step outside the box and don’t be afraid to carry some of your own things with you- I kept pouches of tuna in my bag because I LOVE kidney beans + tuna + salsa so could always rustle something up. Take things home and doctor it up yourself- take potatoes and make your own shepards pie or gnocchi. Take pasta and make a pasta salad…

I’m definitely a late night eater and a procrastinator lol. I try to be to bed by 12 every night so I’ll usually eat around 8ish so that it keeps me full until then! Snacks are definitely my best friends lol.

I wish that I had been as good as you are when in college, because I am a procrastinator by nature and it does get me in trouble sometimes! But other times, it seems like I just can’t get to work unless the deadline is tomorrow and this seems to make me motivated and I do well… Go figure! ;)

Great tips! I def do NOT procrastinate. I am a big believer in getting assignments done far in advance!
I’m not sure I could adopt the 7PM rule though–I’ll work on it though!
Too bad that shepherd’s pie was all potato–I think I might have to make my own version soon!

I totally have the no studying after 7 pm rule too! It works like a charm for sure!!

And you’re a girl after my own heart–last yr in the caf, all I would load up on were the egg dishes..and tons of ketchup of course :-)

    Ooo. Shepherd’s Pie.

I love all of your tips Sophia! Especially the coffee one. I am a bitch without my coffee as well. I get up two hours before my first class and enjoy a leisurely breakfast with a side of blogging. Everyone thinks I’m crazy for getting up early, but I think it really helps me to focus for the rest of the day. I am the opposite of you, though, in that I rarely open a book before 7pm. I am an early bird as well as a night owl…what can I say?

Dining hall food sucks. I’m not gonna lie. Which is why I stopped eating it. Can you just go get veggies and stuff for side dishes to supplement your regular meals? I know in college we had a salad/veggie bar so a lot of people would just get a bowl of those and then save it to cook in other things. At least now you know for next semester what a waste of money the meal plan is!

I LOVE your rules! I agree with all of them :) And I definitely do the 7pm thing and try to do the others as well!

And about omelets, I actually read somewhere that a lot of cooks consider omelets a true test of cooking skills. So it would seem it IS quite possible to mess it up :P

  • Faith // October 25, 2009 at 2:07 pm | Reply

I love your college rules, especially the 7pm rule and the selective reading rule. (In college, figuring out the selective reading rule was a lifesaver for me! I was going crazy trying to get to everything when so much of the assignments were just “fluff,” if you know what I mean. ;) )

I had to laugh at your description of the beef curry! I’ve been there!

  • luckytastebuds // October 25, 2009 at 3:05 pm | Reply

I agree with many of your tips girl! I can’t do the no studying past 7pm rule though, except my modification of that is definitely NO ALL NIGHTERS no matter what! I also find that I feel jipped when I start on my essays ASAP because the professor usually gives tips further down to road that can wreck a lot of the content I originally had. Instead, I hit up the TA’s ASAP and gain clarification on the assignment because ultimately, they’re the ones that grade the papers and they’re the ones who’ve seen all the mistakes made by previous students! Hit TA’s up early because later down the road, they’ll get bombarded by everyone else! Last tip (I promise!), go to office hours for the purpose of showing your prof your face. It will come in handy when you need your grade bumped up by a little teeny bit if you have a legit excuse! :)

Phew. Yeah dining hall food sucks. I have no tips for that. :( Except stick to things that you can recognize…OH! Feel free to give comments to dining hall staff. Sometimes they’re really receptive!

The food at my university was pretty good. However, in your case, you need more hot sauce — EVERYTHING tastes better with hot sauce. :)

  • snackface // October 25, 2009 at 10:01 pm | Reply

Oh Sophia, you know I am AWFUL with procrastination. I swear I never used to be this way! It’s totally senioritis! If I had a 7pm rule, nothing would get finished. I also know that I work well on deadlines, so I now tend to save work. No bueno for my sleep, but oh well.

Blaahhhh dining hall food! I seriously lived off salads and garden burgers for two years…plus whatever baked goods they had goin’ on! Oh, PLUS a ton of food I had stored in my room.

Hope your weekend was fantastic! xoxo

  • Anne K. // October 25, 2009 at 10:11 pm | Reply

Good tips! But I can’t follow the 7pm rule. I’ve just got way too many hours of work, and if I stopped at 7, I’d never be done. Sometimes I don’t even get home from class until 5-6.

Sorry the food isn’t good :( The food at my college wasn’t that great, either. I’m thankful I have my own place now with a kitchen!

  • Emily // October 25, 2009 at 10:19 pm | Reply

I like your rules, but I wish I could use the 7pm rule. I go to rotations all day and have class at night, so I’m rarely home before 7 pm to even start doing homework. :-(

Sorry about the icky cafeteria food. I don’t miss that part of college one bit! I’m so much happier cooking and eating what I like.

  • Joyce // October 25, 2009 at 10:48 pm | Reply

Great rules! And I think most of them would be approved by your professors… ;)

As far as the food goes, I have had my share of bad cafeteria food, and I don’t miss it… I used to try to add as much flavor as possible with hot sauce and ketchup…

  • AnnQ // October 25, 2009 at 11:23 pm | Reply

Good Rules! I like the 7pm one a lot. At work I really REALLY try not to be one of those people who works all hours of the night and burns myself out….totally pointless.

I like your rules so much. I am a procrastinator trying to be meticulous with work!!

  • Rosey Rebecca // October 25, 2009 at 11:43 pm | Reply

You are my hero! I keep thinking that the semester is almost over but I still have two 17 page papers to write and a bunch more reading! I procrastinate like it’s my job. I love your 7pm rule but I never start doing my work until 7! I put it off and then freak out for an hour about doing it before actually doing it. lol

I know what you mean about being sick of school cafeteria food too. My school has a 5 dining halls, a zeps, an au bon pain, a sushi place, another deli, Sbarro, a Wendy’s, and a Green Mountain coffee shop, but I never want to eat anywhere! I don’t even live on campus and I’m sick of their food!

  • Carolyn Jung // October 26, 2009 at 12:34 am | Reply

Oh no! Sorry about that lackluster dorm food. I must say, that has to be the most pale looking sausage patty I’ve ever seen. Tell the cooks they need to put a better sear on it. ;)

i had that same 8pm rule in college!! NEVER stayed at the library past 8…my brain jyust doesnt work the same as it does in the morning and day time, even if I tried to study, It would just be in and out words, nothing would stick

I rememer food was certainly anything but exciting at the cafeterias, I started getting really into cooking in college due to that reason!

  • Melinda // October 26, 2009 at 8:15 am | Reply

Good tips for college students. I have taught undergrad on ground campuses and I think these are all wise tips. Now I teach undergrad online and my students are non traditional and the classes are at night, so the after 7 pm rule may not be as practical for a grown up that puts their kids to bed at 7 and then is finally able to study, do homework and attend class (mine are online seminars). Otherwise, for traditional students they shoudl really pay attention to your advice.

My college had awful food, so being a vegetarian and at theat time there were little options, I was able to get permission to move to housing on campus that had a kitchen and I did not need to buy a meal package. I went back for my 5 years reunion and I was amazed at the changes and how good the food was. So moral being, leave comments and feedback whenever you can. It may make a difference.

I wish I had read your tips when I was still in college. They definitely would’ve helped me out! I always rolled out of bed 10 minutes before my 8 am classes so I was 1/2 asleep most of the time.

I am an evening person. I get a burst of engery around 8:30 pm and that’s when I try to get some stuff done. I would love to wake up early and exercise but I just can’t do it!

I wish I had followed some of those rules when I was in college – life would have been much easier that way…

These days I’m much better about not procrastinating, but I find that I still revert to my old tendencies from time to time!

I was so spoiled with food choices when I was in college! We had lovely food – kind of like Tech’s, but in a smaller dining hall. Guess that’s why I’ll be paying those college loans off for the next 100 years ;)

Whoa, I can’t believe you close your textbooks at 7! In college I worked and had an internship and took on a bunch of clubs in addition to classes, so I was lucky if I was starting work before 7!

  • Astra Libris // October 26, 2009 at 1:58 pm | Reply

Your tips are SO wise! Seriously, every college student should be given a laminated sheet with your list of advice to hang on their dorm room wall… I am incredibly impressed that you’ve figured all these smart college survival approaches in the first semester of your freshman year! Wow!

I was the same way with assignments – procrastinating stressed me out too much! So much less stressful to get the assignment off the list and then heave a big contented sigh of relief! :-) Unfortunately, though, I was not as wise as you about setting a “time to stop studying time” – in fact, midnight to 5AM was my favorite study time in college, which resulted in some massive sleep deprivation… :-p

Ah yes, the college dining hall… I love your method of studying and snacking there! (and oh my goodness, your chocolate granola looks SO scrumptious! :-) ) I had the same problem in college – my school had a mandatory meal plan, and the college food was abysmal… I eventually came up with a method I liked, though – one thing the cafeteria did have was a lovely section of fresh whole fruits, so I would swipe in with my card, and just surreptitiously sweep a couple of oranges, a grapefruit, etc into my backpack, thus emerging with my fruit for the next few days! Such behavior was supposedly “illegal” according to school rules, but I felt I was being quite fair, as I was taking less from the cafeteria than most students would for a “meal,” but I was still saving money as well because I didn’t need to purchase fruit my whole 4 years in college! :-)

Those rules are great, I will be using them once I hit college. I’ll actually use them prior to that because I will be finishing high school AT a college, so these will come in handy!
    Thanks, Sophia.

Sorry about the cafeteria food. I think any cafeteria is just… “blehhhghk!”

    Take care, my love.

I’ve never been able to study in the mornings-I guess I’m just not a ‘morning person’!!
I never stayed in a hostel when I went to college in India-so,it was mostly home-cooked packed lunches(mad by mom). We had a small cafeteria that was being handled by the students of hotel management-it was like a practical class for them(quantity cookery)-and the food used to be amazing!! We had to get there by 12pm otherwise the food would be all sold out by 12.30pm!!
