OOO. EEEM. GIII…How can so many things go wrong at the same time? I don’t even know where to start. I’ve been in such angst and trepidation due to various incidents during my college orientation that I feel like my head has whirled into the Land of Oz and my fingers still twitch in short bouts of panicked spasms.
Here’s a short-capped version of everything that went wrong:
- I (almost) lost my cell phone, which is my lifeline considering that I’m in a foreign place
- I discovered that the bus ticket I reserved to San Leandro was booked for July 6th, not July 15th (Holy Shit!)
- I also found out that it didn’t matter anyway because orientation ended much later than I thought (which meant I had to spend another night in LA, since there was only one pick-up bus per day at noon)
- After I reserved my spot in the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown LA, I found out a day later that I reserved my room for July 19th, not July 15th (What the hell is wrong with me?)
- The food in the USC dining hall sucks. Seriously. I couldn’t even cut through the steak, which was cooked way, way done.
- But the worst thing is: On the hour when everyone was rushing to register for classes, which is first-come-first-serve, I discovered that my registration was put on hold because my freaking housing contract was cancelled!!!!!!
I seriously had to bit down on my lip to prevent myself from bursting into tears! Anyone who has gone to university should know what I’m talking about when I say there is a mad rush to register for the classes you want. While everyone walked out of the computer labs with their newly-printed class schedules for this Fall semester, I was still sitting by the phone, reaching the voicemail over and over again until I finally reached the administration and cleared the misunderstanding.
By the time I got to the computer to register for classes, all the classes I had wanted to take was full. I spent another hour and half trying to find classes that would fit into my schedule, blinking away tears of frustration. My advisor took pity on me and helped me out, but even now, my class schedule is not fixed and I have to check up on the class availability constantly, hoping that someone would drop the class.
So, that’s how my orientation went. Daily fluctuations of misfortunes and disaster, one right after another.
Okay, that’s the bad news. The good news?
- I freaking love USC. The campus is gorgeous, the weather is gorgeous, and the people are gorgeous!
- I already made some friends whom I really like, and found out they were assigned to a housing right next to mine!
- I was assigned to the housing I wanted, which is apartment-style with a kitchen (Hell YEAH!!)
- I managed to reserve another bus ticket on July 16th (tomorrow)
- I eventually found my cell phone
- There are more than five frozen yogurt shops within walking distance! USC is froyo-heaven, baby!
- The breakfast in the USC dining hall was actually pretty good compared to other meals!
- Despite all these dramas, whereas previously would have caused me to crumble under the stress and succumb to ED, I still stood strong. This is the ultimate proof that I can withstand all the college stress and still fight for my recovery!
- Because I get to spend another night in LA, I’m free to blog tonight and catch up with you guys! Missed the blog community so much!
So. It turns out that the score is six bad things to eight good things, so YAAAY! I’ll have to say this trip to LA was still a success!
By the way, I tried to take pictures when I could surreptitiously, but truthfully, the food was really lackluster. I found myself buying tons of foot-long subs from Subway as snacks because the mealtimes were way to early and I found myself getting hungry at night.
My first meal in USC before the dining halls were open:
A TAC sandwich from Submarines:
Turkey, avocado, and smoked cheddar cheese on Squaw bread with all the works
Red Mango, right in the middle of our campus!
Green tea froyo with blueberries
Subway’s new Harvest Fruits Chicken Salad Sandwich:
Chicken with mayo, celery, cucumbers, olives and dried fruits in flatbread with feta cheese (Delicious! Try it!)
More Subway:
Turkey and cheddar in flatbread with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, red onion, mustard and mayo
Hasty continental breakfast:
Apple, muffin, coffee
The worst meal I had in my life:
Crap, crap, and more crap
Second round, just to make sure (same meal):
Still crap (wasn’t gonna take a pic, but still did half-way eating through it)
More Subway as night snack:
Foot-long black forest ham with feta, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, pickles, mustard and mayo on 9-grain honey oat
Picnic lunch:
Roasted veggie sandwich, turkey sandwich, Baked Lay’s, Granny Smith
Way too much bread and too little filling…How the hell can you screw up a simple picnic sandwich?
But on the bright side, here’s a few shots of my beautiful campus:
Welcome to USC, my friends!
Gorgeous Doherny Library, which is 9-stories total (5 underground):
I wanna live in this place!
Stunning ceiling, just like Hogwarts:
Gorgeous pool:
Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism, where a lot of my classes will be!
Parkside Apartments, where I shall live in:
Sorry, I just had to share these; I am so proud and in love with my school! Proud Trojan, fight on! All right, off to catch up with you guys!
P.S. This time tomorrow I will be reaching San Leandro. Hopefully I’ll have better eats to share there!

Oh Hooray! I’m so happy for you
The campus is just gorgeous and to tell you the truth…your sammies all look pretty tasty! Here’s to the rest of your time being smooth sailing. (and hooray for your housing!! woo hoo)

Oh my gosh, what a horrible string of events. At least they were outweighed by all the goods.
I think if I had to pick a cheap and easy fast food to live on, it would definitely be Subway. I love it! So at least you have a good go-to option instead of the crappy food. Having a kitchen is going to be great too – I didn’t have one until my senior year and it was sooooo annoying.
Have a safe bus trip! Weather is hot up here… make sure you drink lots of water

ah girl i’m glad you had fun even with all the complications! don’t worry about your schedule–i freaked out EVERY quarter my freshman year when it was time to register. it always works out! you will be in classes you enjoy!

Oh girl, I’m so sorry about your bad luck. I know how stressful registering for classes is. It’s a mad rush and soooo frustrating.
But I’m SO glad that you love the campus! That’s what’ll matter in a few months time, right?! And froyo ON CAMPUS??? Lucky!! That would be dangerous! haha. Lots of delicious looking sandwiches! I definitely want to try that new Subway sandwich!

EEk, that sounds horribly stressful. So glad you are taking it in your stride and standing tall, Sophia…not everyone would be able to do the same (I’d be hiding under the bed crying
)
What a gorgeous campus! So glad you like it

Sorry to hear about the not so fortunate events but the +’s do outnumber the -’s so good trip all in all! Gorgeous campus and woot woot for getting the housing of your choice. With a kitchen to boot.

I am SO sorry to hear about your troubles! You are so right though–you are proving that you can handle college because you did NOT crumble under the stress. You even found the bright side!
I am so jealous that you have Red Mango on campus!

So proud of you!
You were able to stay strong and keep your cool. Conan O’brien would be proud too
(“keep cool my babies”) Squaw bread sounds interesting. I saw the picture and I was wondering what kind of bread that was. Never heard of it.
Anywayyy, Hogwarts-esque anything is aweeeesome. There’s this school in my hometown that they nicknamed Hogwarts.

I know what you mean when registering for classes. I’ve had that happen to me once. I’m glad the positives outnumbered the negatives. Welcome to the land of the Trojans!!!! lol. You’ll have fun here in LA. Besides, you’re in one of the best schools. I have several friends who went there and my best friend’s dad works there.
Hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly.

i know your frustration with classes! i’m always having some technical difficulties with adding classes and i always have to go on the first day to add.
i totally feel you on cafeteria food. disgusting!

A bit of a frustrating day for you! Sorry!
It’s such a pretty place though. I know things will all come together for you very soon! Sorry to hear about the stinky food!
Sarah // July 16, 2009 at 1:00 am |
Such a list of misfortunes!! It’s good that they seem to be figured out, though. And way to stay strong under pressure, I would have been a crying, swearing mess for sure.
Try emailing the professors of the classes you didn’t get into. They may just let you slide in, or put your name at the top of their waiting list. Worth a try, no?
Kim // July 16, 2009 at 1:35 am |
Awww, USC! How I miss it! Sorry about all the snafus during orientation, but it sounds like you found lots of positives. Change is scary, and traveling is scary… Sounds like you did really well to me!
Maria // July 16, 2009 at 1:40 am |
Oh my gosh Sophia, the campus is absolutely GORGEOUS!! Fabulous weather, beautiful buildings– you are totally right about it all
Haha, it really does look like Hogwarts! Aaaah and 5 froyo places around campus??? And you already had red mango?? You lucky duck! Definitely be proud dear friend!!
Despite all the bad things, I’m so glad that you were able to see the good! It’s all about the half full glass. I have a tough time looking at things from the bright side too. This is a great example of seeing the good behind all the bad–now I will just have to apply this technique in the future
You know you’re in college when you eat subway all the time
Oh, and that mad rush to register? Every single quarter my dear. I wake up at 4:53am so I can register by 4:55am—which is the magic time they open registration.
We missed you too!!!!!

Awww sweetie, I am sending a HUGE hug to you right now for putting up with all the blah stuff that happened but you handled it like a pro! You really dealt with each blow so well and took the breath you needed to in order to just deal. And yesss, orientation was a total buzz of this meeting and that meeting and then oh so dreaded scheduling. just know that you can go to the teachers when the semester starts and talk to them about getting an add/drop form to get into the classes you want. You jsut need to be really on top of it if you want it to happen, though.
Despite all the ickyness there were TONS of great things! Yes USC is gorgeous and its probably one of the most popular schools around! Youre going to have a blast! haha And I love that you found all those fro yo places…now you will REALLY be in heaven!

Sweet mother of the Midwest, that is a LOT of Subway!! You poor thing; dorm food is truly SO awful (unless you go down the street to UCLA, where they’re famous for their insanely good dorm food).
I’m sorry about all that hotel/bus business too–what a mess!!
On the bright side, the campus is lovely and you sound like you’re still enthusiastic. I’m crossing my fingers for better food for you.

First off, the campus looks gorgeous!! I’m so excited to follow your J-school journey!!
If it’s any consolation, I didn’t get into any of the classes I wanted to first year. A lot of them were crap, BUT, I by chance signed up for a journalism class just because it fit in my schedule. Of course, I fell in love with it and ended up switching majors. Who knows, you could fall in love with some of your last-choice classes too
And that’s awesome you’ll have a kitchen! At least you won’t have to 100% rely on gross cafeteria food!

p.s. i love subway

The two college orientations I have been through were ALSO nightmares. (i.e. car failure, bloody noses..) What is up with that?? It’s like a curse for all earnest good-hearted students
Since you survived, I guess that means the College Deity deems you worthy.
Green tea frozen yogurt!! I weeeeeeeesh for some ;-; And your “crap, crap and more crap” made me laugh. I went to one college that had excellent food all-around, but their breakfasts especially were great.
Victoria // July 16, 2009 at 8:12 am |
Wow, that IS totally goregous. Go you for getting to go to such a wonderful school! For reals, you should be super proud of yourself. I know I’m proud for you!
I’m sorry to hear that you had such a mega-shock of bad happenings, but its always great when it means things work out even better than originally planned! Even if the food isn’t so great, I’m sure you’ll be able to make due and perhaps even find a way to make it more enjoyable. Also, I noticed at my school, when there weren’t many kids on campus, the food kinda went down hill. Once more kids are on board though, the food usually improves quite a bit. Hopefully that will hold true for USC too.
Have a great Thursday!

so sorry you had to suffer through so many disasters! at least the good outweighed the bad.
that’s great that you have a kitchen – dining hall food is the worst.
i wouldn’t stress too too much about the classes – tons and tons of people change their schedules in the first couple weeks of the semester – so those spots just might open up for you!

Aww, sorry to hear about that stress and craziness, but I know things are going to turn around for you. The beginning is always hard and a little scary… you just have to stick with it, stay strong, and get into your groove. It sounds like you have a beautiful apartment (what a gorgeous building!) and are already fitting in! Trust me, you’re going to be HAPPY here! And with the kitchen in your apartment, you can always make a few of your own meals, eat a few in the dining halls, and try out some restaurants around campus too! It’s all going to work out and you’re going to do great! I’m so happy for you.

so sorry you had such a stress prevoking start to your college experience, but you go girl with out numbering those negatives with positives!!
Your campus is beautiful and glad you are so excited! I can’t believe I am going into my last year in college and still feel like I am missing some experiences! Guess I will jam pack this year to the MAx!
teresa // July 16, 2009 at 12:28 pm |
this is so exciting! it does looks like a wonderful campus. i’m sorry things didn’t go so well for you, but it looks like you have a very great future!
Anne K. // July 16, 2009 at 12:32 pm |
I’m so sorry you had a rough start! But hopefully everything will clear up now. The campus is gorgeous! Hope the food gets better though
Holly (The Healthy Everythingtarian) // July 16, 2009 at 12:50 pm |
hey, i am glad you looked at the positive after all was said and done! that campus IS gorgeous, and you will be a journalism/comm major (just like myself!) – i love it!
yay for subway – always saves me when no other good options are around! enjoy the rest of your time in LA!
Marta // July 16, 2009 at 12:59 pm |
With the right attitude the good always outnumbers the bad, just gotta focus on the positive, right?!
I’m SO glad you’ve already made some friends, that you like your housing and, most importantly, that you’ll have a kitchen! Eating at the caffeteria is a bad idea and I’m sure would make recovery a bit harder. We don’t need that!!! The campus looks beautiful! That pool looks fantastic!!!! Safe trip back
JB // July 16, 2009 at 1:14 pm |
sorry for those unfortunate events, but your list of positive things WAY outweighs them! i’m happy you love USC. and wow, it really IS gorgeous. and i know what you mean about rushing to find classes. i was surprised at my orientation when i realized how many were already full! i feel bad for the students who are going to the august registration at my school. who knows what they’ll be stuck with. can’t wait to see more eats from you!
biz319 // July 16, 2009 at 1:46 pm |
So great that you could acknowledge the bad things but dwell on the good things!
It looks like a beautiful campus! I loved college, even though I only went for 1 year – I had an athletic scholarship for field hockey, but they dropped the program after my freshman year!
Have a safe trip home!
Clare @ Clare's Two Steps Forward // July 16, 2009 at 2:32 pm |
Well I’m glad the good outweighed the bad! But honestly, I wouldn’t worry about getting classes. After the first two days of classes, people will be dropping them like crazy and you can get almost any class you need.
I’m jealous of your access to so much frozen yogurt! They’re a little behind at UGA…
Julia // July 16, 2009 at 2:38 pm |
What a rough day! I’m glad you met some new friends though! And Fro Yo! Yay, I can’t wait until I move in a few weeks, because where I live now there is none, but I’m moving to Sacramento and the Fro Yo industry is booming there haha!
Alison // July 16, 2009 at 3:25 pm |
Ugh…I’m sorry things have been so messy. But you’re lucky to have a great advisor. At my university I probably would’ve been completely screwed if things like that had happened.
Glad you’re focusing on the positives!
psychoj1 // July 16, 2009 at 3:30 pm |
That campus is gorgeous! So glad you ended up having 8 positive things. That’s so great! Sorry things started out so messy though! YAY FOR FROYO. Wow, I’m jealous…

What a gorgeous campus! I’m sorry about all that stuff happening, but way to keep a positive outlook.
erika // July 16, 2009 at 4:52 pm |
Yikes, that was a lot of stuff at once! I am glad things seemed to get better and just think of all the fun you will have when you start! I still miss college!
Jenn@slim-shoppin // July 16, 2009 at 5:50 pm |
Sophia! Sorry about all the mishaps! I went to a huge school too, Iowa State 40,000 kids! I got lost trying to find my classes, I sat in a class that was for seniors only my first day, and had to crawl away when the teacher asked if anyone was in the wrong class, they could leave. I actually debated about just staying and never going back, but I walked out as the seniors snickered and chuckled! I think everyone has experiences like that! Because you don’t know what you are doing, and you have to ask a lot of questions.
The campus looks great though! So pretty!
Jenny // July 16, 2009 at 6:10 pm |
why is it that all of the negative things seem to hit us at once?! ah well, that usually means that tons of great things are in your future
!
the campus is absolutely beautiful girl!
Gera @ SweetsFoods // July 16, 2009 at 6:40 pm |
Sophia so sorry to hear about your bad luck, sometimes happens to everybody but I see that you’ve good news about the Campus!
I want a Submarine sandwich
Cheers,
Gera
Reeni // July 16, 2009 at 8:41 pm |
I’m sorry so many things went wrong! I hope you can get all the classes you want – that has happened to me too – but I always ended up getting into them from people dropping. I am so glad you got into housing with your own kitchen!!!!!! The library is gorgeous!! I hope you reached your cousin’s house OK!
traveleatlove // July 16, 2009 at 8:42 pm |
I am so excited for you! You should be going home to some amazing grass
Hopefully the worst is over, and now you can enjoy a fabulous fun college career.
Lauren // July 16, 2009 at 9:03 pm |
Awww, you poor dear! I am SOOOO SORRY all of that happened to you. But totally impressed at how strong and optomistic you stayed throughout it all. Way to go girl! Just another reason why I fully beleive you are a superwoman!
Yah, I definitely remember the food in the dining hall totally sucking! Some good eats I found was Cereal, Salad, Waffles and we also had a decent sandwhich/wrap bar. But I usually just stayed away from the hot bar and made big ol’ salads. And TONS of fro-yo!
Good luck sweet heart. Everything will work out perfectly!
Claudia Haas // July 16, 2009 at 9:50 pm |
I want to go back to school. I want to try 18 different sandwiches and I want all that is wrong to right itself and am so pleased that it (finally) did for you. What a lovely new home you have!
Figtreeapps // July 16, 2009 at 9:52 pm |
You are sooooo funny..I was picturing this whole ordeal playing out..you poor thing..sounds like you maintained your sense of humor! You are one tough cookie, I mean a really good white chocolate oatmeal, not the crappy ones they serve in the USC caff!!!!! Figtreeapps
Priyanka // July 16, 2009 at 10:01 pm |
I am so happy that you are liking USC. It is always good to be proud of your school! The eats look yummy. I am sorry about the bad things and the moments of panic and frustrations. But it is really wonderful that the good things out weighed the bad ones!
ttfn300 // July 16, 2009 at 10:04 pm |
dang that pool!!! amazing
sorry to hear about the aweful eats, but it sounds like you dealt with those challenges incredibly well, and there are many good things to be excited about

So glad your bumps in the road are being worked out
Sounds like all the positives definitely outweigh the negatives so far – SO excited for you!
Pocky // July 16, 2009 at 11:07 pm |
Wow that campus is so beautiful!!! The ceilings do look a bit like Hogwarts, lol. You poor, poor thing. I’m so sorry you had to eat from Subway so many freaking times! That place sucks in my opinion. Haha!
Chin up, girl! Everything will all fall into place.
luckytastebuds // July 16, 2009 at 11:09 pm |
gahhh those unfortunate events are inevitable but necessary to make us appreciate all those great things in life – all those cheap thrills..like finding your “lost” cell phone in your bag! (i do that all the time)
So glad to see that despite the not-so-awesome events, you’re looking on the positive side too! You’re making me wanna go to USC…that pool looks so fun to swim in. heheheh
Oh man…..5 yogurt places near/on campus?!?!? JEALOUS!!!! Is there a yogrutland there?? I LOVE the taro fro yo from there…mmm
P.s. I ALWAYS get your red mango combo! Green tea with blueberries!!!
peachkins // July 16, 2009 at 11:16 pm |
This post made me soooo hungry and Red Mango in the middle of campus?? How lucky are you?
oysterculture // July 16, 2009 at 11:44 pm |
Holy cow! What a heck of a lot going on – I’m not sure I would have survived – you held it together much better than me – its such a stressful, nervous exciting time to be checking into school. USC looks gorgeous and can’t wait to hear the follow up details.
keri410 // July 17, 2009 at 12:01 am |
The good list DEFINITELY outweighs the bad… especially the froyo shops part! (;
Campus DOES look gorgeous… I may seriously have to consider moving in with you! Your dorms look great too!
Registration may be stressful, but before you know it, you’ll be catchin on to all the ins and outs and be a pro in no time!
XOXO
Rebeca // July 17, 2009 at 12:49 am |
Oh man… that’s awful… I’m so sorry you had so many unfortunate events but SO HAPPY that you found so many wonderful things at USC (for me it’d be a toss up between fro-yo and the friends).
P.S. talked to the two I know and they’re both working… want to do a blog call?
Pearl // July 17, 2009 at 3:37 am |
We totally have a Yogurt World on our campus, too! and a boba place!
Ruby // July 17, 2009 at 4:27 am |
Oh my word what a gorgeous place to go to college!
And yeah, I have SO been there with that awful sense of everything going wrong, and you thinking nothing else could possibly go wrong, and then it does. And you just think *oh please just shoot me right now*. Luckily though, we get back up and you did AWESOME on picking yourself back up! These moments prove to yourself that you can handle really sucky situations without unhealthy coping mechanisms. Incredible babe!
Pigpigscorner // July 17, 2009 at 6:28 am |
sorry to hear about your bad luck =( but at least you have a longer list of good stuff =) good luck to your new start!
livingfreeforever // July 17, 2009 at 6:32 am |
Yeah! The good outweighed the bad and you didn’t give in to old habits:):):) I can’t imagine how frustrating all that stuff must have been! Good job on looking at the positive though!
Jen // July 17, 2009 at 10:51 am |
I am so excited for you!!
It sounds like you handled the bad stuff very well and that the good stuff def. outweigh the bad! awesome!!
Life will alwaya have good and bad – no matter how much we plan for only good, but being able to get through the bad and enjoy the good anyway is what it’s all about, I think.

New Girl // July 17, 2009 at 12:07 pm |
You poor, poor thing!! That is a lot to go wrong! If it makes you feel better– my sophomore year my classes were canceled in AUGUST, two weeks before school started, because of a financial aid mix-up. I only ended up getting one of the classes back. I cried! But it all ended up ok and I actually really loved my classes that semester. Here’s hoping that a rough start = a successful semester!!
javakit // July 17, 2009 at 1:20 pm |
Poor thing! I know it will get better! Hang in there!
Andrea (Off Her Cork) // July 17, 2009 at 3:50 pm |
Lordy yes I remember registering for classes! And being happy when I was finally an upperclassman and went first. Woo!
It’s college so you will totally have a blast!
Sean // July 17, 2009 at 8:45 pm |
My god that’s a lot of sandwiches you’ve been eating! Are you a freshman going in this year?
Btw I may have to transfer pharmacy school to USC. Those buildings and that campus look amazing. Not to mention Pete Carroll is the man haha!
Kiki // July 17, 2009 at 9:18 pm |
I’m so sorry so many things went wrong at your orientation! But you did an amazing, amazing job of pulling through despite the setbacks. And it seems to me that the positives of USC almost outweigh the negatives of your orientation.. I mean, FROYO!
Happy Friday!
Eralda // July 17, 2009 at 10:35 pm |
The good thing is that you will have your own kitchen which you can stock up with healthful foods and snacks. I hated cafeteria food as well. So over-salted, over-cooked, overly bad.
I’m excited for you! Hugs.
EatingRD // July 18, 2009 at 4:22 pm |
Oh wow! Such a beautiful campus!! I had a friend graduate from there. How exciting!!! I really hated the food on our campus. I think I lived on salads and the frozen yogurt machine since all the other stuff was blah haha. Oh man a red mango? on campus? that would be dangerous for me! I’d go there all the time. You’re a lucky girl!
ingrid // July 18, 2009 at 9:26 pm |
What a positive way to look at things. Yes, somethings went wrong more more went right! I’m gonna keep that in mind when things seem bleak.
