When you give, you’ll always receive.” That’s the message my dad has always ingrained in me whenever we gave tithes, or offered support for anyone in need, or even something as simple as leaving tips for servers.

And throughout my whole life, our family has lived by this philosophy. Our bank account was never positive; whatever we had, we gave. And this philosophy was carried out not just financially, but also with our time and energy. Whenever a person in church needed help or care, my parents took no hesitation in rushing out to visit and comfort and aid them.

I have to admit, there were times when I felt rather bitter towards these people in my church who requested so much of my parents’ time. It was tough to get a family moment, because we never knew when anyone would call asking for help. At that time, I resented that I had to share my own father’s time with so many others.

But as I started to show more interest in my father’s ministry and observed with careful scrutiny, I began to realize that the more we blessed other people, the more blessings we received. I began to see that anything we did, however little, did not fall from God’s eyes, and He rewarded us back one way or the other.

And yesterday, I once again confirmed this truth.

See, here’s the thing: University of Southern California? Not at all cheap with an estimated total fee of $54,000 a year. I received 80% financial grants and scholarship, but the remaining price we had to supplement was still rather hefty for us. Add to that the expense of plane tickets, and all the new materials and supplies I had to buy, and the amount we faced was staggering for a pastor’s meager salary.

I was worrying about it, but my dad confidently assured me that God will provide. And yes, indeed, He did. A couple in our church gifted a three thousand dollars check to my name on Sunday. Holy cow. Three freaking thousand dollars?

I didn’t know what to say; I was so blown away by God’s grace and their generosity. All I could do was get down on my knees and really thank the Lord and the couple. It’s true: Your act of kindness, however seemingly small and trivial, will always be repaid. Even if it is unseen in man’s eyes, it can never escape the eyes of God, and the silent delight inside you in the knowledge that you have done something good is the best reward of all.

This just once against puts a deep stamp in my heart that I will, I will repay all the grace that I’ve received throughout my entire life. I want to live the rest of my life giving, for there is no greater joy than that.

Okay, well, there sure is some joy in receiving, too! Feeling a tad bit richer, I decided to have lunch out with my friend Jane who was visiting from New York. I was very excited to try this new place that opened:
DSC01872
Jason’s Deli! This place has been mentioned several times throughout the food blogosphere and I had been so curious to try the food there!

The menu there was extensive, with lots of different sandwich, salad, and soup options. It was basically like Panera, except there were more choices, and there was even an option to build your own sandwich.

Jane decided to build her own sandwich with a side of chips and pickle:
DSC01875
Hot corned beef, smoked red pepper-cilantro aioli, and provolone on grilled herb focaccia bread.
DSC01874
I ordered the Turkey Rueben with a side of steamed veggies:
DSC01876
Oven roasted turkey breast, sauerkraut, low fat swiss, organic stone ground mustard, grilled on rye.
DSC01877
Look at the size of this thing! It’s loaded!
DSC01879
Truthfully, though it was pretty tasty, it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. I wished there were more cheese in there than turkey!

Jane made me take this picture to showcase the loaded potatoes that she’s convinced must be fabulous because they’re named after her:
DSC01882
I caught a glimpse of someone ordering these, and those potatoes were huge. Like, the size of my forearm. Wowee~

Oh, and the best thing?
DSC01893
Free soft-serve ice-cream! Complimentary for the pampered customers of Jason’s Deli!

Well, I’m off to fill my rumbling tummy again. I hope all of you have a great week of giving and receiving! Oh, and one more thing: I’m meeting two fabulous bloggers tomorrow for breakfast! Who? I’m not revealing! All I can say is, I’m itching with excitement, because they are two freaking wonderful bloggers and I’m so honored to be able to meet them!

Question of the week: How have you been repaid for your own efforts of giving? And, have you ever been to Jason’s Deli?

Is corn beef the same as roast beef? Oooh! Mine was delicious! You should have tried some of mine! Though I always wished they put in more avocados.

I haven’t been, but it looks great! I definitely feel richer when I am giving back, whether in donating money, volunteering, or being there for someone who needs me. Life is much emptier if you just live for yourself!

that was such a beautiful post! it seriously gave me chills. I am soo happy for you and i think it proves that God is always there and always has a plan even when it seems unclear to you. I am soo happy for you, you really deserve this and clearly you learned a lot from it too which is even more important. It seems like you have a great family, great faith, and a great attitude which is all very admirable. Congrats on everything, keep up with the great outlook!

I grew up with a single mom who believed in exactly what you posted about. We never had a lot, but she always was giving what she could–whether it was food for a sick neighbor, time, her services or anything financial we could scrape together.

Although I was a little resentful at times when I was younger, I grew to realize that not only were others richer for her (now our) generosity, but our lives were richer as well.

I don’t mean this in an arrogant way, but I used to get frustrated–why do I always think of other people and give/help when everyone else seems to self-absorbed?

She told me to never change who I am despite any other negativity out there. The reward may not show up in the form of a $3,000 check (but holy cow–so cool!!!) but it will show up in some way, shape or form down the road.

You deserve your reward and God knows you’ll make the most of the opportunity!
Sorry for the rant, but great post!

    That is a fabulous blessing!

There are tons of Jason’s Deli’s in Charlotte, NC – okay, maybe not tons, but several. I love that them steam their veggies without oil or other fats…and the free soft serve is a nice perk, too! :)

That’s so awesome about the check!! (I especially appreciate the awesomeness since I just about cried writing out my own tuition check today…)

I love that swirl in the soft serve… so pretty! :)

As for being repaid for giving… hmmm. I’m still operating on faith that “tithing” is going to come back to me!!

Water kim chi sounds like my kind of kim chi. I especially like the “unspicy” part.

Giving is such an important part of community – giving, without any thought of repayment, but in return seeing the reward of someone having a need met. We’ve given often to other and we’ve had many people give to us. A while back our landlord gave us a break (without us even asking) when employment opportunities weren’t great. It’s such a sign of community when people do those things.

What was that saying? God works in mysterious ways. When you least expect it, he always comes through. That’s one thing I always trusted upon. God doesn’t give up on us no matter how weird things get.

I’ve had a couple of instances when I was in a moment of slight despair and desperation. But somehow miraculously, things turn out all right.

I wish there was a Jason’s Deli here because those sammies look really good. But if there is one, I need to know where. ;-)

  • broccolihut // July 7, 2009 at 12:02 am | Reply

I LOVE Jason’s! They have a pretty decent salad bar–with Dr. Krackers! Those spuds they serve ARE huge; I’ve never ordered one–I think it would take me a week to finish it!

Wow, I had no idea that college was so expensive! It’s nowhere near as much here. I would always see American shows and movies and hear how parents would put money away in a college fund-now I see why! :o How wonderful for you to get that cheque! :D

And another thing that we don’t get here is sandwiches that look like that! Wow, that is a lot of meat! :o

Also – about the quinoa salad, I totally would have added feta if it were for us, but like I said – Mark is dairy allergic so I couldn’t! I think it’s a great addition!

  • Maria // July 7, 2009 at 12:28 am | Reply

Wow, Sophia, I am amazed by the couple’s generosity and God’s grace too! I’m just speechless at the wonderful gift they bestowed on you!

I don’t know if this counts, but, ever since we were children, my sister and I always would buy gifts for our grandparents (birthdays, Christmas, etc). However, my cousins never did, and still occasionally forget to do so now. So, whenever New Year’s or birthdays come around, my sister and I get better gifts. Hehe, and we’re not supposed to tell anyone ;) .

Never been to/heard of Jason’s Deli. Maybe it’s an East-Coast thing? Mmmm soft serve ice cream is always the best ending!

What a heartfelt post. I am a firm believer in the philosophy you speak. My daughter is tireless when it comes to serving her church. When my son-in-law (his name is Jason:) was laid off from his job, members of her church were a huge support to her and her family. All of their prayers were answered when Jason was called to Texas to work again!

Thank you for a welcomed reminder.

Only a life in service of others is worth living. That’s always been my philosophy! Nothing is more rewarding and fullfilling than giving yourself to hlp others! And, like you say, God’s grace provides back to cover your needs. God always provides. I guess that’s the same concept as karma, right? I’m a firm beileve in it because I experience it every day. Every single act of kindness I do comes back to me in full. God rewards me like that. But when I do something less than nice (and we all do those things, we’re human) it also comes back to bite me in the butt. Example: the other day I found a monthly bus pass on the floor at my gym. I take the bus every day, and this way like July 1st, so I would have free bus for the entire month if I picked it up. I did pick up up. The right thing to do would have been to take it to the main desk and have them place it in lost & found. Instead I kept it for myself. Well, I’ve missed the bus every day this week on my way back from work, which makes my commute nearly 2 hours long. Hahahaha I just came back from taking it to the lost & found desk of the transit office! I ain’t having no more of this bad karma!!! I deserve it, I should have done the right thing at once! But it just goes to prove your point, God’s grace gives you back what you put out… exponentially!
I’m so glad you got that gift from your church friends!!!! you deserve it and I know you’ll put it to such good use.
Man, tuition is expensive in the US!!!!!!

Wow! What an amazing story of God’s grace! I have been amazed so many times I can’t even count them. There have been times that we were afraid to tithe because we were broke. We put it anyway, and EVERY time we did that–we walked out with a gift from somebody for at least twice the amount we gave! God is so good to us. I’m so glad He is providing for you and I know He WILL continue!

What amazing news, that’s great and so generous of the donor!

My hubby would love that deli too!

I looooooove Jason’s Deli. I used to go all the time with my hubby and order the “Bird to the Wise”. This sandwich has oven roasted turkey breast, hot pastrami, and swiss on a toasted onion bun. Soooo good and sooooo fatty. I quit eating them after I needed a shoe horn to get me through the front door.

Congrats on the gift! Just make sure to repay everyone by doing your very best in school. :)

Congrats on the gift! Giving really is the best thing in the world. I don’t think I’ve actually received anything physical in return, but I just feel the need to save the world anyway, so I love helping out :)

    I guess that’s why I chose healthcare as a profession :P

As for Jason’s Deli, I haven’t heard of it before! Right now I live in the land of fast food (middle of nowhere MD) and we don’t have anything interesting :( . But, I grew up in the land of traditional Jewish Deli’s (north Jerz :P ) so I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to deli food haha. Looks incredible though!
    Have a fabulous night :D

I think we do benefit by giving to others, but sometimes it’s not always apparent, or we reap the benefits later. I think we are called to minister to other people and give of ourselves solely for the purpose of impacting their lives (although ours may be indirectly impacted). I am so happy you got a 3,000 check! God works in amazing ways.

I’ve never been to Jason’s deli, but who can argue with free softserve?

I like your familys philosophy–and it is SO true!!

Congrats on the scholarships-as well as the generous gift from the couple! What sweet people!

Wow…that is so lucky! I’m not the best with generosity, but my husband is – I try to learn from him. Good karma definitely goes around.

    Those sandwiches look great!

What a blessing! That is amazing… God Always Provides, right?

Those sandwiches look really meat-y, but I’m with your… More Cheese Please!

but free soft serve kind of makes up for it, huh?

P.S. Thanks for your prayers girl!

We actually have a Jason’s Deli in my town and I haven’t been there before. I think my husband has and liked it.
Love your philosophy of give and get more in return. We try to live by the same thing. You have learned an amazing lesson and I have no doubt you’ll “pay it forward”.
