Burp and Slurp~

“I’ll have the 1135 kcal dish, please!”

June 26, 2009 · 77 Comments

Lots of pictures today, so I shall try to cut the crap and get right down to the chase…but I just have to mention this ONE thing:

I am an idiot. Okay, you all already know that, but here’s yet another concrete proof: Last night, my prayer group and I went out to Cheesecake Factory for dinner to celebrate one of the group member, Mark’s, birthday. I wanted to read about reviews on that place, so I looked up on Foodbuzz for restaurant reviews…and one of the reviews that came up contained the entire nutritional facts of Cheesecake Factory.

Yeah, I should have totally walked away. But curiosity got the better of me. I clicked on the site, and scanned through the calorie quantity in each dish. Holy shit. Every dish, besides the Weight Management menu, was 800 kcal and above. And the dish that I was planning to order, the Cuban Sandwich, was a whooping 1135 kcal. What. The. ???!!!

Ever heard of “curiosity killed the cat”? This little tidbit of nutritional info totally killed my gung-ho attitude towards eating out. It killed all appetite in me, period. What to do? We already decided on the restaurant and everything, and this was going to be a birthday dinner celebration. There was no way I could back down now…And I’d sworn to myself never ever to order salads in a restaurant until I reached my target weight, so taking a safe option was out for me.

There was nothing I could do, but to suck it up and just…face it. It was a complete “in-your-face” moment.
DSC01627 I should have poked my eyes out. Why the hell did I have to look at the nutritional information?

As I ordered my dish, I almost blurted out, “May I have the 1135 kcal dish?” That number was ringing in my head the whole time, and I had to really struggle to eat it…
DSC01649 Hello, 1135 kcal. I chickened out a bit and ordered broccoli as the side, so now it’s probably like 800 kcal. But still, the fear remained in me. I wanted to knock myself against the head for being so stupid as to look up on details I totally didn’t need to know.

Cuban Sandwich: Slow-Roasted Pork, Ham, Swiss Cheese, Pickles and Mustard on a Grilled and Pressed Cuban-Style Roll

It was delicious. Way too delicious for me to skimp. The roll was really buttery, and the thick slather of full-fat mayonnaise freaked me out a bit, and grease dripped down my fingers, but I managed to eat everything up, and even helped my friends finish theirs:

This one was my other favorite. I stole big spoonfuls of this.

Fresh Fish Tacos: Three Soft Corn Tortillas Filled with Fresh Grilled Fish, Spicy Avocado Cream and a Spicy Citrus Salsa. Served with Black Beans, Rice and Guacamole (I helped with one piece of taco, but seriously…don’t order this unless you like bland food)

And strawberry cheesecake, decorated with a special greeting for the birthday boy:
DSC01651 Please excuse the horrible pictures. I really did not want to use flash, but the restaurant was so freaking dark! Grr…I hate restaurants with low light settings…Apparently it’s supposed to give off a romantic mood? Romantic my ass! I want romance with my food, and how can I appreciate the full beauty of my food if I can’t even see it?

Anyway. I digress. I shall rant about the horrible restaurant lightings in another post. Today, it’s all about food, especially because I’ve been cooking and baking some mighty fine stuff. Check this out:

Do you know what this is? If you shouted out “Taro root”, give yourself a huge clap on the back! Taro is my favorite root vegetable besides kabocha. It has this gorgeous, purplish-flecked flesh and is really, really starchy. It tastes slightly nutty, with a hint of floral sweetness that is really subtle yet intriguing.

Of course, I had to use this to make yet another “mix-it-up” bowl:

Coconut-orange Taro Stir-fry with Crushed Peanuts

The base:

  • Taro, steamed then pan-fried (instructions and pictures below

The “mix-ins”:

  • 2 large shitake mushrooms, chopped
  • handful of soybean sprouts
  • smaller handful of shredded red cabbage

The dressing:

  • 1/4 small onion, minced
  • 1/4 cup crushed peanuts
  • spoonful dried unsweetened coconut
  • pinch of chili powder and flakes (as much/little as you wish)
  • ~1 tsp fish sauce
  • ~2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • salt and pepper

The toppings:

  • chopped green onions
  • 1/4 cup crushed peanuts
  • orange segments
  • sprinkle dried coconut

For the taro:
DSC01654
1) Steam
DSC01656
2) Pan-fry, set aside. Easy, peasy.

For the dressing:

Heat up some oil on skillet. Toss in the onion, peanuts, stir until soft and fragrant. Toss in the coconut until toasted, then sprinkle in the chili powder and flakes.
Pour in the fish sauce, soy sauce, and coconut milk, and let simmer until thickened. Squeeze in the orange juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Altogether:

When the dressing is done, leave the heat on, and throw in all the “mix-in” ingredients. Cook until soft and fragrant, then toss in the taro to cook. Remove from heat onto a serving dish, then sprinkle on the toppings. Decorate with the orange segments. Conclusion:
DSC01670

I know I say this all the time, but this is seriously my best “mix-it-up” bowl yet…I’m certain!

DSC01672
Every mouthful was a burst of fresh flavors: The nutty peanuts (duh), the fragrance from the coconut milk, the citrus splash from the orange, the kick from the chili powder, the carbiliciousness of the taro…
DSC01674 I loved, loved, loved the crunchy bites of peanuts in every forkful.
DSC01675
And how could I have neglected soybean sprouts for so long? It used to be the only vegetable I’d eat as a kid. I need to create more dishes with these wonderful, crunchy, noodle-like sprouts. Yum~
DSC01677
What? More pictures of this tantalizing dish? Your wish is my command…
DSC01676 DSC01678
But wait! That’s not all! Guess what I baked today!
DSC01658
Mini Chocolate Chip Butter Bites!
DSC01660
When I saw this recipe on Donna from My Tasty Treasure’s blog, I knew I had to make these…I really needed to use up the much-neglected bag of mini chocolate chips, and the amazing, mouth-watering pictures on Donna’s blog sealed the decision.
DSC01661
Not only was it all cute and snowy, it was truly delicious. A bit too sweet for my taste, but I knew my youth group would love it. I decided to pack half of it up for my dear student Jennifer, who let me borrow her glasses for a week while my eyes were still healing from the freak accident at the church retreat.
DSC01681
Look, I even packed her glasses into a small gift bag!
DSC01683
The recipe for these delicious buttery cookies can be found here.

Phew! Did I get everything?

  • Did I mention that I am a retard? Check.
  • Did I rant about the stupid restaurants with dark lights? Check.
  • Did I brag about my genius taro dish? Check.
  • Did I show off how sweet I am to bake for my youth group? Check.
  • Did I give credit to dear Donna for her fabulous recipe? Check.

Sorry, I’m all over the place at the moment. But thanks for bearing with me and still reading! >___<

Question of the day: What is your opinion about restaurants posting their nutritional information on the menus? Do you look up on nutritional stats beforehand?

P.S. Thank you, thank you, thank you all for your prayers. Lee Mama had a successful surgery. The surgery was tough and took much longer than expected, but she’s fine now. My parents went to visit her and came back marveling about her high spirits and her courage. Thank the Lord for the sweet woman’s strength! She is my role model for the kind of granny I wanna be…A kick-ass granny!

hey girlie – I think your AMAZING. You didn’t “chicken” out at all so don’t beat yourself up at all. im glad the sammie tasted good :)

as for the whole posting nutritional info..im totally against it. I feel that when I go out to eat I want it to be stress free and not have to worry about what I am eating. Thats why when I go into NYC i refuse (so do my parents) to eat at a chain. Knowing the calories totally kills the mood/enjoyment of food.

    love the cookie bites :D

  • Maggie // June 26, 2009 at 9:23 pm | Reply

Wow, you did great. Cuban sandwiches are probably one of my favorite foods, when I get up the courage to eat them. Bobby is in Miami this weekend and he’s probably getting lots of amazing ones. I miss Miami! (But actually, we might be moving there soon… shh :) ) The fried plantains are to die for as well.

Something almost as good as kabocha?? MUST TRY.

    MMM to the cookie bites.

    hey girl

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING job with ordering what you TRULY wanted– i just admire you SOOO much! i know this was NOT easy– but i am SOOO glad you did it!! i too have looked up nutritional info before going to restaurants– and sometimes i wish i hadn’t. the truth is– we just need to remember our bodies will ‘let us know’ what we want and when we’ve had enough– and sometimes its GREAT to just plain indulge :)
thank you for this post!!!!!!! xoxoxoxo

wow you were a busy bee!!!

i don’t count calories anymore so i try not to allow listed calories to affect my decisions – back in my hard core bingeing days i estimated i’d eat about 15,000 calories/day, about 1-2x a week. the world didn’t explode then (and neither did i) so don’t sweat the 1135. you did great!

  • Maria // June 26, 2009 at 9:34 pm | Reply

Yes, I admit it–if possible I look up the menu to for calorie stats or to find the healthiest dish in there (that I will still like). I know it’s OCD, but sometimes I sit there and take forever to choose anyways :/. I hate to end up with a greasy dish that I don’t even like! Hey, but you did a great job by sticking to what you were going to order. Kicking that ED’s butt!

I love the cheesecake factory even with it’s calorific dishes—sooo good! I just portion things out because they give you so much. Their bread is mmmm. It is really dark in there though, haha, you really can’t see anything ;) .

I love taro too. I hear good things about taro froyo, which I still have to try. Love soy bean sprouts, just had it today :) . Just simply seasoned the Korean way though.

I’m so happy to hear the prayers came through for Lee Mama. Hope you have a great weekend, Sophia!

What a great post! Calories at restaurants dont count! Eating out is a way to indulge yourself. Those fish tacos do look amazing

  • Gina // June 26, 2009 at 9:39 pm | Reply

The Cheesecake Factory is notorious for their HUGE portions and awful nutrition facts. I mean, I guess it’s just such a “big” restaurant here in columbus and everyone knows how AWFUL for you their food is. Did you know there are people who go there like, every week?! Those are the people that have serious health issues, but going once in a while is ok. You are SO amazing for still going after you read the nutrition facts, and for still ordering waht you had originally planned!! That’s just awesome, seriously. Back when I was in recovery I would have thought of same lame excuse to either a) not go or b) order something else. Of course, nothing on their menu is low calorie, even the “healthy” menu! I think their lowest calorie dish is maybe 600….yikes!

Either way, I’m glad you enjoyed your meal. It did look very very tasty!

  • Emily // June 26, 2009 at 9:47 pm | Reply

    Hooray for taro!

I look up restaurant info because I am vegan and want to make sure there is something on the menu I am able to eat! That said, going out to a restaurant is an Occasion and I will allow a Splurge. Order something you would never eat otherwise! Make it worth it!!

LOVE the checklist. Girl is on point :)

  • Heather // June 26, 2009 at 9:48 pm | Reply

good for you for livin large and having a good meal. My favorite thing there is the seared ahi tuna. i follow that up with a big slab of cheesecake…. mmmm!

    hey love
I’m so sorry that psyched you out initially. But the upside is you pushed through! That’s great I’m so happy for you!

I’m also glad to hear Lee Mama made it through the surgery, my prayers are with ya’ll

I have to admit I do look things up on the internet before I go into it. I’m hoping to just relax in the very near future. It will be part of my “kick EDs butt” checklist :P

    Have a fabulous weekend!

We have a Cheesecake Factory by my house. The portions are huge there! Finally somewhere that can tame my runner sized appetite.

It sounds like you enjoyed it though. Remember that eating out is a treat and is meant to be enjoyed.

  • Sweta // June 26, 2009 at 10:31 pm | Reply

1135 kcal dish-wow,now that’s something I’ve got to try!! Have you noticed that as the calories go up-so does the taste quotient??? ;-) Enjoy, while you can!
P.S: I don’t check the nutritional contents(now that I don’t consult anymore) for myself-if I did,I’d probably order the one with the most calories just to know what it tastes like!!

  • Bread + Butter // June 26, 2009 at 10:36 pm | Reply

You have definitely been a buzzzzzzy bee. LOL. A mighty feast at Cheesecake and all that deliciousness you made. Yum!!!

When I eat out, I don’t worry about nutritional facts as much. I may looks online for menu option, but it’s not like I eat out everyday. It’s good to not worry about being healthy for at least one night.

  • Melissa @ For the Love of Health // June 26, 2009 at 10:57 pm | Reply

First, what an amazing taro dish you created! It looks fantastic! And of course your baking looks really good!!

I also check restaurants’ nutritional information. I just like knowing what I am putting into my body. I think its fantastic you ate the sandwich you wanted AND I also think its fantastic you opted for broccoli on the side to add some wonderful health to the dish. :-)

    Have a fantastic weekend!

way to be love! you’re incredibly strong, despite dabbling back and forth between what to order after seeing the stats, you went ahead and kicked ED’s ass<3 !!!! *claps*

i hate when restaurants are dark! i like to actually SEE what i'm eating thanks!

  • Christina // June 26, 2009 at 11:29 pm | Reply

That’s almost a whole day’s worth of calories. By the time you order a drink, it probably is! Holy crap!!! I like the restaurants are up front about things like that nowadays for two reasons. First, you would never realize so you can portion control or think of a different option and second, for allergy sufferers to have access to ingredients and info.

Never tried taro root, you make it look so yum!

  • donna // June 26, 2009 at 11:43 pm | Reply

My goodness. Gobs of calories, glad the taste was worth it!! OK to indulge now and then:) So glad you liked the cookies. Thank you for trying them and for the shout out:)

  • KennyT // June 26, 2009 at 11:50 pm | Reply

I have never looked up the nutritional stats of restaurants, and I don’t believe in low fat cooking, haha. I think what makes us happy is how we feel when we eat.For me, I think eating happily is more important.

Btw, I love taro root too. Taro ice-cream is a delicacy for me, your salad looks so tempting!

  • Tay // June 26, 2009 at 11:53 pm | Reply

HOLY girl your butter bites and meal look awesome!

Eating out can be incredibly deceiving because they cook in loads and load of unecessary fat. But sometimes you just have to suck it up, splurge, and enjoy the meal! You made a great choice by getting what you TRULY wanted, but by substituting a healthy choice on the side. That’s what enjoying food is all about!

I actually like it when restaurants most their information. I do look it up, because it helps me realize that some things may not be as healthy choices as you might think!

  • Erin // June 26, 2009 at 11:58 pm | Reply

So proud of you. I have a love/hate with nutritionals. I think these things should be available, but I’m not always mature enough to handle them. I doubt I could have eaten that after seeing the calories, but I think it’s so awesome that you did it and it inspires me to not worry about stupid calories.

  • broccolihut // June 27, 2009 at 12:06 am | Reply

Good for you for not skimping! Looking up stats beforehand is something I do quite often, but I figure I am pretty good at estimating/determiningg what is healthful, so I don’t obsess about it. I don’t eat out that often so I figure I should enjoy it!

  • Natasha - 5 Star Foodie // June 27, 2009 at 12:09 am | Reply

I haven’t been to the Cheesecake Factory in years and they even have one now at Fairoaks mall near me and I haven’t even been there once. I didn’t know they are now posting the nutritional info.

Love your fun mix-up bowl and the cookies are scrumptious!

  • Lorraine @NotQuiteNigella // June 27, 2009 at 12:26 am | Reply

That is absoutely frightening the amount of calories in that although it looked absolutely worth it from your description. I remember choosing a Taco Salad at Taco Bell thinking it would be a healthier option and then fiding out it was over 1000 kcals! :o

  • Alison // June 27, 2009 at 12:26 am | Reply

I love Cheesecake Factory, but I do hate how unhealthy it is. I go there mostly for the cheesecake (which I split in two). But unhealthy though it may be, the dishes are quite tasty. Their cashew chicken is really good. I also like several of the salads.

I’m sorry the calorie count bothered you – it was have me too. But I’m glad you were still able to enjoy yourself. That’s what’s important.

Taro sounds great! I’ve always wanted to try it.

  • Mrs Myers @ Eat Move Write // June 27, 2009 at 1:00 am | Reply

Yes, it’s a bad idea to look up nutritional content after you’ve eaten it. I only use that stuff to look things up BEFORE I go. Once the deed is done, just walk away slowly and put it out of your head! lol.

    Yam taro? Um… huh… what?…

  • katecooks // June 27, 2009 at 1:02 am | Reply

i think it’s great that you went and ordered the cuban you wanted even after looking up those calorie counts! on one hand, i love when restaurants post calories because sometimes a simple dish that i think is healthy might actually not be at all. for example, i used to get this great salad several times a week at koo koo roo until i found out that it was like 700 calories! im glad i discovered that and could make the salad more of a splurge than a daily lunch. but on the other hand, i get nervous now sometimes going to a restaurant when i havent seen a menu beforehand and have to order off the cuff. i think that is one of the more negative effects of being able to see menus and calories before dining!

  • Kasha // June 27, 2009 at 1:06 am | Reply

Wow! Great post! Lots of content. First of all, I am ashamed that I never look at nutritional facts for restaurants. I figure it is a break in the counting of calories. Cheesecake factory would be the worst place to look at. Way to use a totally unique vegetable! I am impressed for sure! Those cookies look amazing. I think you are amazing. Keep up the good work!

  • Cheryl // June 27, 2009 at 1:14 am | Reply

Lord I am so with you, we had a new place open up 5 guys burgers and fries, I made the mistake of looking at the nutritional stuff, not one burger less than 1000 calories, I have never gone there, I ruined it for myself! McDonalds now has it on their wrappers, dont look!!!!!

First, I’m happy to hear Lee Mama’s surgery was a success! Kick ass grannies are definitely the best :)

I look up calorie counts if they’re available. I find the ones for chain restaurants can be pretty shocking. I don’t understand how they squeeze so many calories in some of the dishes. They must pre-soak everything in butter and oil, and then season it with only lard :P Of course, that’s what usually makes it delicious!! I think that sandwich looks like it was worth every calorific bite! Oh, and dark restaurants are one of my pet peeves too. I would like to see the food I’m about to ingest please…

I’ve never heard of taro root before, but I love me some root veggies (I basically live off carrots!). I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for it.

PS I would recommend not looking at the nutritional info for places with names like the “Cheesecake Factory” in the future :P

  • Jessica // June 27, 2009 at 7:41 am | Reply

Taro is my favorite root vegetable!

I used to obsess over nutrition facts ( I grew up as a professional figure skater and that life makes you a little crazy about diet). I realized it was to obsessive towards the beginning of college after I stopped competing, but then it still took me years to aggressively stop myself from looking. I’m happy to say that almost ten years later (from when I started trying) I no longer give a damn how many calories something has. I just make sure I eat a balanced diet most of the time and throw in some exercise.

  • Claudia // June 27, 2009 at 7:43 am | Reply

Good job on eating the dish anyway, that takes some guts!

To answer your question, yeah, I look at the info when it’s available. And I’m sad to admit that is what influences my choices from then menu. (>_<) I think it's a good thing they have the info posted though. Even if it's not that great for someone with an ED, it's still good for other people who really need to watch their cals.

    Anywho!
I hope you have a nice day today (yay, weekend!) Lot's of hugs sent your way!

Hi girl! I am so glad that Lee Mama is doing better. :) God is so good!
Okay, can I just say that I am super duper proud of you for eating that sandwich anyway?! I am so glad you did it! Keep reminding yourself that what you eat does not make you a better or worse person and is completely independent of your personality and morality! You did the right thing, and I am so proud! :D
As for the nutrition information, I think restaurants should post it for people who are on diets. It would probably help them. In MY case, though, ever since January I have made sort of a promise to myself to never count another calorie. Since I know the calorie content of a lot of things, though, sometimes I will just make a rough estimate to make sure I am getting enough. I will NEVER, however, go out of my way to check how many calories something has! It’s sort of a pact with myself and with God. :) My reasoning against ED is this: “Okay, ED, I am going to eat this super-scary, unknown-calorie dish. I’ll know if it is ‘too much’ if I wake up tomorrow and have gained 10 pounds overnight. If not, YOU LOSE.” Needless to say, I’ve won every time. :)
    Have a fantastic day!

THAT’S what’s trule important Sophia- numbers throw our head in a spin, but from a rational point of view…think about something like Thanksgiving. Most Americans eat WAY more than that number in a single meal and it’s no big deal. Our bodies are more adaptable than ED lets us believe- I look up info beforehand and yeah…get all stressed and panicky (having promised myself I would *never* order a ’salad’/diet-y meal out) but I think it’s great to really bite the bullet sometimes and see that actually…nothing happens. :D

I have to admit I love the cheesecake factory–the food is always good (though such enormous portions, and we always feel cheap if we split an entree) and the chocolate peanut butter cookie dough cheesecake is one of may all-time favorite desserts. Good to know: if you eat in the bar, there’s a bar menu with small portions of the restaurant’s versions…and at half price if you go early.
PS Yes, I think Japanese eggplant would be fine….

Everything looks so good at the Cheesecake Factory. I’ve never been – don’t have one near me. Sometimes I do look up the nutritional info – it depends on what state of mind I’m in – how much I’m into watching what I eat. Usually when I eat out I like to splurge a little! Your ‘bowl’ looks amazing, as always, never had taro! And mmm the cookies are a nice treat. I’m glad Lee Mama is doing ok!

Good job for facing your fears and eating the sandwich anyway :D I’m proud of you! Oh, and that cheesecake looks so yummy!

I do look up nutritional stats, just because I like to have some idea of what I’m getting. I love your recipe, and those cookie bites look yummy, too. I’m glad to hear that Lee Mama is doing well! She sounds like such a fighter :D

How do they even manage to stuff nearly 1200 cal in a sandwich?!?!?! Hahahaha I guess enough cream and cheese and fries do the trick!
I’m all for the posting of nutritional value in restaurants. They’ve been so sneaky in the past, and even their salad ends up being caloric bombs. I mean, if you order “creamy fettuccine alfredo with deep friend chicken nuggets” you know you’re in for a fatty ride, but when you’re trying to be good and stick to something healthier, and then they go and hide crazy calories in salads or grilled items… that bothers me! I saw a show the other day that compared the nutritional facts in salads of a whole bunch of food places here in Calgary. Sweet Lord, they were all SO bad! Even the ones without the creamy dressings! Mind you, a lot of them had bread components to them, as well as cheese, nuts and bacon. Hahaha if you strip all of that away, and stick to the veg with a vinaigrette, you’re good!
Those mini bites look so cute and delicious!
    I’m doing a taste-test today, for a wedding I’m catering in a month! I’m excited!

wow, Sophia, I’m very very impressed w/you facing the Cheesecake Factory challenge. You are a true champ. :)

  • Rachel // June 27, 2009 at 11:37 am | Reply

You, my dear, never cease to amaze me. Yay for sandwiches! It looks super yummy and you deserved it. You can do ANYTHING!

Oh man when I saw that taro root I totally was thinking, “Sausage? Salami? Ham?” in my head. Hahaha. Your mix-it-up bowl looks delicious, as usual. I love how you incorporate sweet flavors into a savory dish, it makes your dishes so creative and appealing.

The little thank you package with the mini bites is too adorable, and very sweet. I’m sure she’ll appreciate it and be so touched. I love the little bear along with those glasses too!

I am all for restaurants posting nutritional information. Maybe not right on the menu like some restaurants are starting to do (that would ruin the fun in eating it for me!) but I think it should be available for those who choose to look at it. I tend to let curiousity get the better of me and look meals up beforehand, not always, but sometimes. I rarely go out to eat so usually I just try to suck it up and enjoy myself no matter what dish I get.

So happy for Lee Mama and her surgery! What a brave, inspirational woman.

And P.S., you are most definitely not a retard. :)

    Much love,
    Rachel

Ugh, I HATE nutritional info. It totally kills the experience for me. I especially hate when the menu has little symbols for what’s “healthy.” I try really hard to get what I FEEL like, but there’s all this chatter in my head sometimes. I’m glad you got the sandwich anyway. I think that’s taking back your power. I used to always look up restaurants before going to eat there, but I’ve stopped. I still have some memory of what the numbers are for some places, but I try not to go to those places. The numbers, for me, are distracting from me listening to my body. Until I can do that better, I don’t want to know the nutrition facts!

Hi there! Belated thanks for your nice comment on my blog, it means a lot!

Your blog is exciting and gives me hope! This cheescake thing is incredible and inspirative!! I was very busy because of exams, but I am looking forward to read more of your posts and try some recipes:)
Oh and I love the running post you´ve written few weeks ago! I am slowly getting to this point/weight where I will be allowed to exercise and I am afraid of it a bit – I don´t want to become it obsession again. But your post is such a hope for me again! Thank you and have a nice summer! ola

I am glad that you actually ate the dish. When I go out I largely do not pay attention to the calories like checking the nutritional info etc.

You are so sweet to make your friend the thoughtful pack!! Love the sweet bites and Taro is something I am hearing for the first time. Love the stir fry!!

  • Gaby // June 27, 2009 at 1:36 pm | Reply

You might just be the best and most creative cook ever! I really can’t wait to get back home and start cooking up so many of your recipes. They all sound like such unique combos of flavors that I would never think of on my own but sound amazing.
Way to go on eating what you wanted at the cheesecake factory too! I bet not only was the food fantastic but the sense of accomplishment you felt afterward was well worth it.
Plus everyone else ate normal meals there too and they’re fine, right? It’s a celebration after all and it’s something I’m learning while on vacation. We’re all indulging, my family, my friends, if everyone else can laugh off the extra butter, pastries, baguettes, and pasta and copious amounts of french food we’re eating and simply enjoy it, we sure as hell deserve to do the same.
    Hope you’re doing well!
    xoxo

I think those kcal counts are a double edged sword… good for planning but so hard to deal with at times… and broccoli is NOT chickening out… for serious broccoli is delicious!

    Choco Chip Butter Bites! Yum!!!

Sophie, forget about the Kcal, seriously…enjoy the food! I love those peanut chocolate chips cookies…..

oh i LOVE the fish tacos at CCF! yum. oh and i know how bad the nutritional stats are there! i just suck it up and deal with it if i go there. even their salads are loaded! oh well, the food is delish and it is fun to indulge every once in awhile. i am so glad you did! all the food looks yum. but what looks even better are your recipes! especially those butter bites.. i am racking up a list of food i want to make from your blog! ahhh! xo

If I just want to go out and eat and have a good time, I have no desire to know the calorie intake because I don’t want that in the back of my head all day. But, there have been times when I’ve really wanted to be careful when counting the calories adn knowing exactly what I was eating worked really well for me.

Your food looks incredible! And Cheesecake Factory is probably my favorite restaurant. I’d eat there any day of the week!

  • Gera @ SweetsFoods // June 27, 2009 at 9:06 pm | Reply

A sandwich with 1135 kcal means for me 1.30 hour of running, too much exercise only for a… sandwich!!

Sophia is risky to order such quantity of kcals practically half of the kcals of all day.
I want right now your chocolate chip bites!

    Cheers!

    Gera

The portions at the Cheesecake Factory are SO huge – I feel like I can only ever eat half! Your stir-fry looks great! I’ve never cooked with taro, I’ll have to try it!

  • Jamie // June 28, 2009 at 2:52 am | Reply

I read this post yesterday and you had me laughing out loud, but husband grabbed me and I didn’t have time to reply. I think that is amazing that any restaurant or anyone would want to make the calorie counts of their food public! You handled the situation extremely well!

That taro dish looks awesome! I’ve never tried to cook taro before…though I think I’ve eaten it. I might make my mom cook this for me this weekend ;)

I loooooove cuban sandwiches! You can make a less drippy/greasy version at home too if you have a panini maker (or a foreman). yuuuuuuummmmyyyy!

  • EatingRD // June 30, 2009 at 12:49 pm | Reply

It’s amazing the calorie counts at restaurants. It really makes me think twice about my ordering selections if they are posted or sharing. And while I don’t think they need to be staring you at the face because frankly sometimes I don’t want to know and just enjoy my meal, I think that the overall benefits of having them available at restaurants more than outweigh the risks involved.

  • Melissa (Nibbles and Wiggles) // June 30, 2009 at 2:08 pm | Reply

I love when restaurants list nutritional information. I actually just caught wind of Cheesecake Factory’s info as well and I was shocked. I mean I knew before looking that being a vegetarian there is little for me to choose from there and nothing that is healthy, but still shocking to see how unhealthy. But I like being informed. I like knowing. Additionally I am a bit offended on the naming of the “weight management” salads. WTF is that about?!

Kudos to you for not letting that information deter you from your goals.
