Ma Maison stands up for stereotyped Asians

May 2, 2009 · 61 Comments

To compensate for the lack of foodie pictures on my last post, today’s post will be stacked with a whole bunch of food porn. I cannot wait to share with your the freaking delicious eats I had last night.

But first, a little introduction. Remember I said I was dining at a French-Japanese restaurant called Ma Maison yesterday? I was the one who suggested this venue to my youth group friends (Huijun, Shiya, Mei’er, and Huizhen) after hearing rave reviews about this place. I have never ever really had real French cuisine yet (French fries and croissants don’t count), so I was quite interested in how French-Japanese food would be like.

As soon as we reached the place, I was a bit surprised because the exterior just isn’t what you would expect out of a pretty high-class restaurant (in my standard’s anyway). We were greeted by this shady little wooden man:
DSC02954
How unglamorous! He looked like a French version of KFC’s Colonial. But I was reassured by the looooong line queued outside the restaurant. Singaporeans know their food, and you can never go wrong with a restaurant that attracts this many customers. We had to wait more than an hour to secure a seat!

But finally we were ushered in by an enthusiastic Japanese lady who exclaims “Hai, hai,” in a high, excited breath every minute.

Despite the dubious exterior, the interior decoration was warm, charming, and quaint. It was like walking into an old-fashioned English cottage house or something. Check out some of the oldie decor:
DSC02955 DSC02979
There were also shelves of old dusty books, little vintage ornaments, worn-out crockery, and dim ancient lamps and candles, all creating a very rustic, romantic yet comfortable atmosphere.

The menu was also really cool:
DSC02957
It came out bound in a thick, smooth leather.

But as I perused the menu, I began doubting the restaurant again. Paella? Isn’t that a Spanish dish? Stroganoff? Isn’t that Russian? Carbonara? Isn’t that Italian? So why is does this place have a French name again? But then I shrugged it off.  As long as there’s good food, who cares? Besides, them Europeans always seem to get us Asians mixed up anyways, so why can’t we do the same thing to them? I can just imagine the little Japanese giving a I-can’t-be-bothered shrug and exclaiming, “French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, they all look the same to us, so who cares?”

Anyway, back to topic. Of course we had to order the classic French dish, the escargot in garlic butter!

First, the server handed each of us a tiny plate with a tiny fork and pincher:
DSC02958
There were six escargots which arrived in a hot ceramic plate over a bed of flamed salt:
DSC02961
We each had a piece:
DSC02962
I don’t know what I was expecting, but the meat was so succulent and buttery and glided down my throat.
DSC02963
I guess I thought snails would kinda taste like mussels and clams (which I don’t really care for), but it had none of the fishy taste that I was dreading. Anyway, I was so happy I could finally declare I have officially tried and enjoyed SNAILS!

Next came all our entrees.

I ordered the specialty of the house, the hamburg steak:
DSC02971
It comes with a perfectly runny fried egg on top, and doused with their famous brown sauce, which they simmer for 28 days!
DSC02974
The sauce was worth every single day of labor. It was thick, rich, and dark, with a concentrated tangy taste that was so intense without being overwhelming. It was awesome mopped up with the hamburg steak, which was the perfect blend of lean and fatty meat. The meat was so moist that you didn’t need a knife at all, just a fork to slice each piece off like butter, put it into your mouth, and let it glide down your throat, tantalizing every taste bud…
DSC02978
The deep-fried potatoes that came with it, however, was lackluster. They were luke-warm and soggy! Blech.

Mei’er’s dish was similar to mine, except hers came with melted cheese on top instead of the egg:
DSC02973
Huijun’s dish was also a hamburg steak, but hers came in a sizzling hot plate. The sauce was also different from mine; hers was sweeter, and they burst into flames as the server poured the dark liquid all over the plate. Way cool!
DSC02965
Huizhen ordered another specialty of the house, the Beef Stroganoff with Omu-rice:
DSC02967
The beef came smothered with a very strong dark sauce. It was delicious, but I still preferred my tender hamburg steak.
DSC02968
The omu-rice, however, was excellent! I loved that the egg was just barely cooked, so still so rich and creamy over the small bed of rice! Yum!
DSC02970
Shiya ordered the fried salmon-steak:
DSC02976
Hm. It was good. Nice and fat and juicy, but nothing special.

Oh, check this out:
DSC02977
It’s the key they give you to act as a bill! Ain’t that nice!

After that we were full, but apparently with room enough for some dessert! We clambered out of Ma Maison and headed to yet another Japanese restaurant, MOF (stands for Ministry of Food).

MOF is a vibrant Japanese family-style “pub” (is that an oxymoron or what?) selling all sorts of Japanese drinks, food, and desserts, but it’s most known for its sweet stuff.

We ordered a different bunch of stuff to share. First, the Matcha Latte:
DSC02984
This was basically a drink made out of milk and green tea powder. The drink was very fragrant, creamy, and frothy, but the richness was too much for us. After several sips, we were done! It also came with a side dish of sweet chewy jellies, sort of like a Turkish delight:
DSC02985
Cute, eh?

We also got a Matcha Zen:
DSC02981
This came in a thick red bean paste, several sticky glutinous rice balls, and a scoop of green tea gelato. It was delicious, though the red bean paste was a bit too sweet for me. The gelato was freaking amazing, though, and I’m not much of an ice-cream lover!

Then there’s this cute bowl:
DSC02982
The Shiratama Kurian, which is composed of soft serve vanilla ice-cream, kanten jellies, fruits, Japanese rice dumplings, and a dollop of red bean paste.

Wait, there’s more! Three scoops of gelatos on a waffle bowl!
DSC02987
The flavors were cookies and cream, green tea, and hazelnut. Sorry for the shaky picture, I had to hurry as my friends were diving into it like frantic hyenas over the last scrap of meat! They were all really good, especially the hazelnut, as that flavor was a first for me.

Oh, and last but not least:
DSC02986
Coffee. Hey, after all that luxurious food, I needed something to perk me up from my food coma. It came with a lovely little nut-encrusted cookie, which I liked because it was barely sweet. Crunchy, brittle, nutty, just the way I like my sweets!

I thought dinner was a smashing success, not because of the yummy food and the terrific company, but the way I handled my ED. Actually, to tell you the truth, I barely even needed to handle him at all! ED was strangely quiet throughout the entire process.

After so many continuous and constant in-your-face challenges, I think ED’s been beaten down pretty bloody. I’ll say he’s in the ICU hooked up to all sort of IV drips and wires and tubes, scared shitless. Rot to hell, ED! He’ll definitely be trying to recover, but I won’t let him. I think right now, I’ve got the upper hand on him. I’m in control now, and ED has no place telling me what to do.

Instead, all I could think about was how freaking blessed and grateful I am to have the beautiful friends I have with me right now. We had the best time together, talking about all sorts of things. We managed to stay humorous and lively, and firmly pushed away all melancholy aside. Tears may come, but it can wait until I’m safely on the plane.

Anyway, I have another piece of rather exciting news to share with you: My pastor asked me to do a testimony in front of the whole church tomorrow! I was glad to be given the last opportunity to share my gratitude to these lovely, amazing brothers and sisters in church before I leave, but I’m also a bit worried. I’m not scared about the public speaking; I’ve had many experiences being on stage already. Rather, I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to say all the things I want to share! There are so much things to tell, and the perfectionist in me don’t want to miss a single detail!

I’ve done a bit of preparation for it, but hopefully tomorrow morning on stage I would have all the points I want to get across in mind and be able to relate them strongly and clearly. Wish me luck, everyone!

Question of the day: Do you get stage fright? Have you ever had to give a speech or perform in front of people? What was it, and how did you survive it? Did you enjoy it?

As I’ve said, I’ve been on the stage a lot of times. When I was young in Singapore, I was like the only Korean girl in school, and during special occasions when the school would organize performances, I always volunteered to do the traditional Korean dance on stage, complete with the several layers of brightly-colored traditional costume and hand-painted fans!

Good on your for beating ED down into submission. I hope he stays there permanently! :)

That food does look very good and has induced a craving for matcha zen…

Well Done!!! Dinner looked great and now you’ve got me craving for Ma Maison. I went there once but haven’t been back since so there’s another restaurant to put on my ‘food’ list!

I’m sure you’re going to do so well tomorrow for your testimony. God will see you through! *hugs*

love all that food porn.. it made me crave fooooood!!!!
I used to get very nervous when I have to do presentations or teach…but as I do it more often, I get less nervous. I think the key is to be well prepared, be confident about yourself and make eye contact with your audience.

  • Nancy // May 2, 2009 at 10:45 am | Reply

Omg lucky you! Ma Maison looks like such a wonderful place to go to. My favorite dish was Shiratama Kurian! I LOVE EVERYTHING IN THAT BOWL! :D :D:D

P.S. my bad for misunderstanding! Still, durians are chau chau >:)

What a fabulous post! I enjoyed looking at everyone one of your meals! The hamburg steak sounds perfect – I love that kind of melt in your mouth goodness. And that sauce sounds fabulous! I’m so jealous!

The green tea gelato in the red bean paste also looks great – I looove Japanese desserts!

I’m also glad you’ve got ED scared. You go girl! I’m proud of you :-)

Good luck with the testimony! I’m sure you will be amazing. As a law student, I’ve done a LOT o public speaking – I enter heaps of public speaking competitions and debates too. I don’t get stage fright, but I’m always a little nervous. I think that’s natural and actually means you will perform better. I get the best rush from it! Totally love having people listen to me speak!!!

I’ve never been a big fan of French food, so I was WAY more excited about the dessert place. It looks awesome!

  • ksgoodeats // May 2, 2009 at 12:25 pm | Reply

Hah the colonel! What a cool menu and bill though! Hazelnut gelato is my 2nd favorite flavor – SO good!!

I’ve learned that the best thing about talking in front of people is that those people really want to see you do well. They aren’t there to see you fail – they don’t want you to do poorly. They’re on your side :)

  • girlichef // May 2, 2009 at 12:46 pm | Reply

Wow…you seriously eat so well! Everything looks really good (and I love the menu)!

    Hey darlin,

Your restaurant review was too funny. You’ve had me chuckling all morning. Love your sense of humor!

My pastor asked me to give my testimony a while ago as well. My best advice would be to write it out beforehand and read it aloud a few times just to get the hang of it. Then remember that everything in church will be rooting you on. God will bless you for sharing your story girlie!

    Have a wonderful saturday!

    With Love,

    Emily

Escargot is one of my favourite dishes… So glad you tried it and WAY TO GO with ED getting a punch in the face tonight! I literally burst out laughing at the “French version of KFC’s Colonial” comment- haha.

I know you’ll be great giving your speech- I get stage fright and am often nervous in front of people, but remember that they are there and listening because they know you have something important to share…deep breaths, relax (and if all else fails, close your eyes and pretend you are in an empty room!)

You were right, that was some incredible food porn! Phew!
Good luck with the speech! I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully :)

Whoa whoa whoa girl’s got an APPETITE! I honestly want to hug you right now for eating all that and ENJOYING your time with your friends rather than worrying about calories and such! ED can stick it up his butt!

    Love you!

Interesting restaurant experience! Definitely does not appear to be French, aside from the escargot. But you’re right, as long as the food is good, who cares what they call it!

  • runsarah // May 2, 2009 at 2:29 pm | Reply

Awesome food porn! I am sure that you will do awesome giving your testimony…I get nervous speaking in front of crowds but giving my testimony was one of the best speeches of my life, it came so much easier than a school presentation!

  • Andrea@WellnessNotes // May 2, 2009 at 3:12 pm | Reply

I soooo enjoyed reading this post! Now I want to eat a hamburger steak with brown sauce that has been simmered for 28 days… The pics were awesome, too! The little wooden man in front of the restaurant is so funny. No wonder you didn’t know what to expect!

I’m glad ED is all beaten down… :)

    Good luck with the testimony!

  • Sweta // May 2, 2009 at 3:39 pm | Reply

Wow-loved reading about your restaurant adventure :)
The gelato looks great-though I’m not sure I will ever try escargot’s in my lifetime!!

  • Kerstin // May 2, 2009 at 3:46 pm | Reply

Wow – that is definitely some great food porn! Everything looks so yummy. Good luck fitting everything into your speech tomorrow :) I have to give presentations for work pretty often, but I still get nervous, unless it’s an audience I’m really comfortable with.

  • Kim Hooper // May 2, 2009 at 4:32 pm | Reply

Oh my goodness, my favorite is the ice cream with the red bean paste and gooey balls (that sounded weird). I love, love, love that dessert. I cracked up at what you said about Europeans getting all Asians confused. Haha. At least your food was delicious. I can’t believe that sauce simmers for 28 days!

  • Carolyn Jung // May 2, 2009 at 5:39 pm | Reply

What a charming place. And such an eclectic menu! Just shows that if you go anywhere with an open mind, you’re often pleasantly rewarded.

“the little Japanese giving a I-can’t-be-bothered shrug and exclaiming, “French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, they all look the same to us, so who cares?” <– that’s exactly what I was thinking when I read about the interesting blend of Euro cuisine at that “french” restaurant! So funny! I’m really glad you had a great night with your friends, and got to try some interesting food! I AM SO THRILLED that ED was silent during your meals, that is great! Silent ED = one step closer to being DEAD ED! I have confidence that one day very soon you won’t even have to THINK about the presence/absence of ED thoughts, because you’ll be so far out of his clutches! I know you’ll do a great job in church tomorrow, and even if you leave out a few little details I bet everyone will be so touched by your words and the overall experience that you share. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you get back in to USC! When will you find out?

  • Sophie // May 2, 2009 at 7:51 pm | Reply

Hahahahahaha! Your writing is really entertaining!! I think that the food looked georgous!
Have a great day! You will do yourself proud!!

  • breadplusbutter // May 2, 2009 at 8:04 pm | Reply

Whoa!! I wish I was there when you had all that food. ED can suck it! =)

I’m sure you’ll do fine in your testimony. Just be honest and true to yourself and it’ll go smoothly.

I get stage fright whenever I have to speak in front of people or even do small presentations. I’m a wreck beforehand. I don’t talk to people. I want to be by myself to try and gather my thought, if I can. I know eventually I’ll have to do it. When the time comes, I just have to suck it up and get it done and over with. Halfway through I’ll eventually begin to relax and get into my groove, so-to-speak. It’s a major relief afterwards whether the talk was a success or not. If it’s in front of people you know, you’ve got their full support.

  • teresa // May 2, 2009 at 8:53 pm | Reply

Food porn indeed, YUM! Sounds like such a fun night.

Before I do any sort of speaking or performing, I consciously slow my body down. I breathe slowly, feel my heart rate slow, and stay as calm as I possibly can for as long as I can, otherwise I end up a nervous wreck beforehand. Then when I’m all done, I go out to the hall and freak out (quietly of course!) You’ll do awesome, let us know how it goes!

  • Jen // May 2, 2009 at 9:39 pm | Reply

Escargot is always so rich and delicious-tasting (and the portions are relatively small), so it’s a lovely appetizer choice! The dessert looks sooo decadent. I could go for some ice cream, but it’s a bit cold at the moment. :)

Good luck with your testimony. Don’t be afraid and speak from the heart!

  • Emily // May 2, 2009 at 9:44 pm | Reply

Another fantastic culinary adventure! Sounds like a lot of great food. I had green tea icecream for the first time a couple of summers ago, and it was really delish.

Good luck with your testimony tomorrow. I’ll say a little prayer for you! I combat stage fright with positive visualization: I picture myself actually doing whatever it is that I’m nervous about (auditioning, singing, etc.), and doing it well. Then when I get the the actual audition, I feel as if I’ve done it before and been nervous before, so somehow I don’t feel quite as nervous. I don’t know if that even makes sense at all!

Anyway, I’m sure you’ll be terrific, and God will use whatever you say to minister to others. :-)

  • oysterculture // May 2, 2009 at 10:50 pm | Reply

another great post, and I love all the pics. I also really appreciated the originality of the restaurant – the key idea was clever.

I love escargot, and the picture of the utensils reminded me of the scene from Pretty Woman.

All that food looks so interesting and delicious!

I bet you’ll be GREAT giving a testimony. I’m a perfectionist and wouldn’t want to miss a single detail either but I’m sure as long as you speak from your heart everyone will be able to tell and if you don’t say it all, I’m sure they will still feel it : )

  • KC Jones // May 3, 2009 at 2:47 am | Reply

Great pictures, as always, and I am so jealous, because you just got to eat all these foods that I don’t! haha I did think of you earlier today, though, because I was at a church retreat and we had these great mediterrean dishes and I wanted to take pictures, so I could boast too. haha The food was exactly what my body wanted and I remember wondering to myself, if I had known before how good, actually good-for-you food that tastes good is, then would I ever have developed a relationship with ED? I don’t think so. I mean, my soul felt nourished! *sigh of contentment*

I am really, really happy for you that you are doing so well and are enjoying life. Know that whatever you end up saying in church is exactly what God ultimately desires.

    Cheers!

  • Emmy // May 3, 2009 at 3:44 am | Reply

Stage fright like no other. How to I survive it? I don’t. I make a fool out of myself every time.

Love the ED hospital analogy. I bet ED was just way to dazzled by the exquisiteness of all that food to chime in on any part of your night.

I would love to have been eating at that restaurant with you all. I bet the check was HUGE though.. simmering a sauce for 28 days!!!!! Can you say labor-intensive? Or if not that, at least not very energy efficient having that burner on for so long, hahaha. But like you said, the taste totally made up for it.

    Loveyababe.

    Yummy eats!

I have been in many dances in school as a kid, but the thought of going to the stage always frightens me! And now with the presentations, I feel the same but once I start I just forget about everything. It is just the initial phase that kills me!

  • Mimi (Damn the Freshman 15) // May 4, 2009 at 5:43 am | Reply

Woohoo! You go girl! That hamburger steak looked diiivine! And I too would have torn into those sweets like a rampaging she-wolf.

Haha, it’s funny you mention that about the menu-checking beforehand. The person who suggested that to me in the first place, quite awhile ago, was a trainer at a gym. She confessed she did it so that she’d know if she’d want to go somewhere for dessert afterwards or just settle for coffee.

I find that when I “walk in blind” I get a lot more paranoid about the menu. Maybe one day I won’t, but for now it’s a nice way to assure myself I can find plenty of yummy things to eat. But I totally understand why someone wouldn’t want to do that.

Thanks for the recap on your extravagant Japanese-fused dining experience! I love gelatinuous rice balls (gelatinous anything, really… I like weird textures!), so that dessert with them floating in red bean paste is intriguing to me. i want some!
Congratulations on the testimony!!!! I think by the time you read this, it probably already happened: how did it go?! I hope nerves didn’t take away fromt he enjoyment of that great honour!
I, for once, LOVE public speaking! I always have, I always seek out opportunities to get in front of a crowd and say something, hahahaha I was one of the nerdy kids volunteering to give informational presentations on random topics in school… yeah, I wan’t very popular! This was so fun to read. I’m definitely craving some Japanese food.. I haven’t have legitamate Japanese in years. So many interesting things you ate, and what beautiful pictures! ED had no business interrupting what looks like a great time.

That’s so exciting about giving the testimony! I get stage fright very often, and I usually spit out something along the lines of what I’m trying to convey, but I may be stutter-y or talk to fast. This though, is different – you are in front of a warm, loving church of people who are all wishing you the best and wanting you to succeed. Just let God give you the words to say, and I’m sure you’ll deliver your Testimony beautifully.

I also want to thank you for the sweet comments you have left on my blog, they always make me smile.

    Take care!

Hey girl! I hope your testimony went well – I wish I was there to hear it! You should record it ;) I cannot wait to hear how it went. I’m sure you blew everyone away, as usual. I could listen/read your words for hours, you’re awesome.

Japaneeessee food! All looks delish, screw ED…there’s too many good food choices in the world to pass up ANY of them ;) I think the desserts are my fave in this one – those jelly things look interestingly good, and chewy…mmm! But I must say, the only time I’ve tried escargo I nearly puked :P needless to say snails are not my forte…but maybe I’ll give the little boogs another chance on day. But only if you’re with me! Haha! I’m gonna need someone as inspiring as you to get em’ on my fork :)

    Have a lovely day!

    Love, Meg

p.s. almost forgot – I used to get stage fright, but talking in front of people actually makes me feel powerful now, and I like the feeling of how it feels after you’ve acomplished it.

What a wonderful honor! I’m so glad that your last days in Singapore include such a wonderful celebration at your church. And your dinner with your youth group looks fantastic. That brown sauce sounds sooo delicious. And oh matcha gelato sounds AMAZING. Good luck!! I’m so proud of you for how far you’ve come! You’re doing great; I’ll be thinking of you!
