Burp and Slurp~

A Tour of Singapore, sort of

May 1, 2009 · 55 Comments

Sad, tragic news: My dinner last night got postponed as a couple of friends I was supposed to meet got stuck at work. So no Out of the Pan. I did have a nice relaxing dinner in solitude, though, of random mix-match of things I needed to consume and clear up before I leave.

Not very interesting, but just in case you were still dying to know what I ate last night…:

  • Steamed cauliflower with turmeric and cumin powder
  • 20 mini chicken hotdogs
  • 700gm (about 2.5 lbs) of sweet potato, sliced and baked into chips
  • a big bowl of chocolatey oatmeal made from 3/4 cup oats, 2 tablespoons cocoa and 1 tsp vanilla
  • …and the grand finale of 3 big-ass Jollibean peanut pancakes.

I think I eat more than a sumo wrestler, but it seems I actually need this amount in order to gain!

Anyway, since there is a serious lack of pictures, I decided to compile some everyday pictures of Singapore as a tribute to the country where I have my fondest childhood memories…

Sophia’s Picture tour of Singapore

There are so many familiar scenarios of Singapore that I will dearly miss, but I’ll only be able to portray a few…

There’s the tall, practical apartment buildings with no-nonsense and frill-free architecture…
DSC02931
The loud, noisy kopitiams (coffee shops)…
DSC02932
The hawker centres (open-air complexes with many different inexpensive food stalls)
DSC02934
Selling dirt-cheap food…(Can you believe the freaking cheap price?)
DSC02949
If you ever come to Singapore you’ve got to try its local favorite, the chicken rice (vegetarians, please accept my apology)…
DSC02948
The crowded food courts
DSC02945
The many different food kiosks
DSC02947
My favorite Mr Bean shop selling amazing Japanese pancakes…
DSC02935
The best ever…
mr bean cheese
And my other favorite food stall, Jollibean
DSC02939
I shall sorely miss my daily fix of these incredible peanut pancakes
peanut pancake
The fresh, live fish available in every supermarkets…
DSC02941
And the abundant variety of fresh greens!! (And the adorable little old ladies in their traditional clothes)
DSC02942
The exotic tropical fruits
DSC02933 DSC01792
This is what I will not be missing…
DSC02952
A lot of old, red-faced men drinking in the middle of the day…
DSC02950
The air-polluting idolatry
DSC02951
The freaking crazy prices of dairy!
DSC02943
Cheese and ice-cream lovers, you don’t wanna live here in fear of bankruptcy…

DSC02944
I have received permission from my friend Jingwen to post a picture of her, so here is the face behind the “famous” person:
DSC01496 Excuse that weird expression on her face. She likes to make random funny faces! And notice that Burberry bag in her hands? This is Singapore’s very own Shopaholic!!

But on to the warmest, most loveable hosts ever, Wengang and Liwen:
DSC01540 Aren’t they a good-looking couple? They’re like angels to me; they have helped me so much in my recovery.

I will not cry. I. Will. Not. Cry.

On a brighter note, I’m quite excited (and a tiny bit fearful, but that shall pass) for tonight because I’m meeting my church youth group friends for dinner at this fabulous French-Japanese restaurant, Ma Maison. I’ve heard superb reviews about this place, so anticipate some yummy pictures~

So long, dear blogger friends!

I have to get to Singapore. In Asia I have only be to Korean multiple times, but nowhere else. I’m hoping to do a more extensive Asia trip next summer. Hey – I just read your bio – I think you are really brave for going through and sharing your experiences.

I miss Singapore a lot! Nice to see some pictures in here :)

Aww GREAT pics of Singapore, the narrative really makes me feel like I’m right there with you, NOT chewing gum and seeing everything in real life! Sorry you missed Out of the Pan last night, but at least you have plenty of crepe inspirations to last you a while!! Your hosts look like such kind people, I don’t know why I didn’t realize they aren’t your age! I hope dinner tonight goes well and you can have fun with your friends…crying is ok!! As long as you smile afterward and take lots of pictures (mental AND digital) to remember everything and everyone by!

Woah WOAH I would probably cry if I saw that pricetag on Ben & Jerry’s! Something needs to be done about that madness!

These pictures are so beautiful and different. I know you’re going to miss this place so much, but you can always go back and visit :) and your friends will always be near & dear to your heart. Enjoy your night out with your friends tonight, and enjoy the amazing food as well ;) I’m sure you’ll order somethat that’ll make us ALL drool, as usual. Hey, I was thinking – I’m sure you coud find some way to recreate all those foods that you’re gonna miss over there – especially the peanut pancakes (which look heavenly, by the way :) )

    Have a lovely day!

    Love always,
    Meg

    p.s. I feel like I eat like a sumo wrestler too ;)

Thanks for the tour!!! SUCH cool stuff! I can’t believe the price of dairy… is it just that there’s low demand??

  • girlichef // May 1, 2009 at 11:17 am | Reply

Thank you for the virtual tour…wish I could actually be there myself! What are those amazing fruits?! Such beautiful friends…I can feel the love :) And I’m not sure what I’d do if I lived there, as I am a cheese-a-holic.

  • Yasmin // May 1, 2009 at 12:14 pm | Reply

For some reason I haven’t been getting you posts! Glad I found you again :)

  • Ashley // May 1, 2009 at 12:15 pm | Reply

Wow, I must/need to go to Singapore and try these peanut pancakes… and the Japanese pancakes! I mean, WOWOW!

Your friend Jingwen seems likely a lovely girl! As do your hosts. What a fabulous time you’ve had!

And a few tears is ok.. But remember, you will go back and visit again!

But why is dairy so expensive over there? That’s CRAZY! I definately couldn’t live without cheese for very long… I think I would end up spending the $$ to get it!

  • Katherine // May 1, 2009 at 12:32 pm | Reply

I am just amazed at the dairy prices. That is insane!

Thanks for sharing pictures of Singapore and of you friend.

This post totally made me want to go to Singapore. Fortunately, I’m not a big cheese fan, so I think I’ll get along okay. :)

I loved seeing your pictures. I love seeing all the food you ate for dinner to become healthy again. I love that you are healing. I may not know you but I am extremely proud of you!

  • snackface // May 1, 2009 at 2:54 pm | Reply

Sweetpea! First and foremost, I think I missed something. When are you moving? Where? To the U.S.? I feel like a turd for missing that. But anyway, the relationships you’ve created are beautiful and precious and will never leave you. They will forever be in your heart, so cry if you need to cry when you physically leave them. It will only make that relationship stronger within your soul.

Secondly, I love all these pics! Thank you for the tour! Somehow I need to get my hiney over there…

    Have a glorious day!

Thanks for the tour :) Love the pictures! Also, I feel like a sumo wrestler too, so you’re not alone there.

  • Jenn@slim-shoppin // May 1, 2009 at 4:18 pm | Reply

I love your pictures. That’s insane that the dairy and cheese are so expensive. I think $3.00 for a thing of icecream is too much!

    Thanks for sharing your trip!

Thanks for the pictures of Singapore! I love them and it makes me really want to travel there!! I’ve never been anywhere in Asia, but I love all different countries and cultures, so hopefully I’ll be able to go soon! :)

Those peanut pancakes looks so yummy! I love anything with peanuts in it, and if it’s sandwiched between two fluffy, doughy pancakes… my knees weaken!
What a great photo-tour of Singapore. I’ll be sure to hit that Mr. Bean place if I go. Only after I stuff my face at Out of the Pan, that is!!
Have fun at your dinner tonight, I hope it’s a jovial occasion. Come back with stories and yummy photos :)

20 mini chichen hotdog?? Give me some of that.

Thanks for sharing those lovely pics. Such delicious food Singapore has.

Thanks for the awesome photo tour! I want to visit Asia so badly.

  • Joanne // May 1, 2009 at 7:58 pm | Reply

All of that exotic fruit alone is making me want to go to Singapore, let alone those peanut pancakes! I bet you could easily recreate those by making some regular pancakes and stuffing tons of peanut butter in them.

I LOL-ed at the 2.5 lb of sweet potatoes! It does take a LOT of food to gain and I only seriously gained after my med school interviews – tons of free, catered or 5-star restaurant food, no exercise allowed. It was great.

Don’t cry, Sophiaaa! Everything will be okay in the end. Goodbyes with great friends are never goodbyes, just “till we meet again”s. :)

I can’t believe dairy is THAT expensive. Why?!

  • Jessica // May 1, 2009 at 8:39 pm | Reply

Wow, those peanut pancakes look amazing! Anything with peanuts/peanut butter automatically has my attention, hehe. Singapore sounds like a lot of fun :)

  • Maggie // May 1, 2009 at 8:49 pm | Reply

I really really want to visit Singapore (and other places in Asia – I’ve never been!). I have this thing where I don’t go somewhere until I learn the language though, so I have to get on that :) (Well, maybe not be fluent, but be comfortable enough to get around.) I’m pretty sure Japan is next on the list (Bobby has family there) so I need to start learning Japanese. I have the rosetta stone for it though!

You sweet potato chips sound delicious. Actually that whole meal sounds delicious. Pancakes?? I’m in :)

  • Carolyn Jung // May 1, 2009 at 10:13 pm | Reply

My friend/former-colleague Lori and I used to joke that we thought we sometimes had tapeworms because of the amount of food we could eat. We’d go out to lunch, and we’d both be famished. We’d always blame it on the supposed tapeworm. But hey, there are just some days when a girl is just hungry! ;)

  • ksgoodeats // May 1, 2009 at 10:31 pm | Reply

Thanks for the “tour”!! Everything is so colorful, I love it! Your friends are gorgeous!!

Why is dairy so expensive?! Mmmm pancakes :)

  • Morgan // May 1, 2009 at 11:47 pm | Reply

YEEPS at the dairy prices! I don’t think I could live there. ..I’d have to cut back on ice cream.
    No siree.

Mhm. But the fruities and pancakes..yUm. And your friends DO make an adorable couple. Awww.

    =]

Oh! And in response to your comment – there is a fabulous little Mexican restaurant near my house (El Abuelo) that serves up a MEAN burrito.
Come here and I’ll take you there! Heehee.

Luff ya, girlie! I hope you have a wunnerful time tonight. <3

    Haaaay girl,

Love the pictures. Bring us all back some of those amazing looking peanut pancakes!

I’m shocked at the cost of dairy. I’d definitely go vegan in Singapore for that.

    Have a safe trip home.

    Loveyababe.

I also don’tlike durians either. In chinese, I call durians “chau chau” and it means stinky. Cause it IS stinky! I don’t understand why my mom likes it. Blech!

We went to Singapore on a holiday in 2007-and we loved it!!! It’s a pity we didn’t know what to eat and where-but,we did try out a lot of places. The exotic fruits were great(tried the dragon fruit ). Didn’t get to try durians though we saw signs of it being forbidden in places like the buses/MRT,etc ;)
