Burp and Slurp~

Yet another crepe…

April 30, 2009 · 57 Comments

Jingwen and I met for the final time last night. It is most probably our last meeting because she has to go to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, and will only return Sunday, which is the exact day I’ll be leaving. Hopefully we can at least meet up in the airport; I’m crossing my fingers that we might have sufficient time to maybe even have one last dinner together.

We had a wonderful time together today, but this time was a bit more solemn because at the back of my mind, I could not forget the fact that this might be the last time I’ll be seeing my dear friend for a very long time…This is a small world, but when it comes to this, the world seem to vast for me!

Jingwen treated me again last night! I felt a bit bad about it, but I think the fact that I’m eating well and clearly gaining some weight makes her very happy. Originally she wanted to go to Out of the Pan again, but since we’ve already been there three times and I’ll be visiting that place tonight with my old gymnastics friends, we decided to try someplace new.

We went to Canele, a French patisserie chocolaterie that also serves classic French cafe-style foods. It seems that in Singapore, every coffee shop, ice-cream parlor, pastry/bakery shop, chocolaterie, etc. all doubles as a restaurant! I find it kind of weird, but since they seem to serve good food anyway, I’m not complaining. But you don’t see Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen Daaz in America selling burgers along with their ice cream, do you? Though Starbucks seem to be getting just as ambitious with their broadening menu…
DSC02908
Anyway, Canele was quite awesome. It has a very romantic, modern and sleek atmosphere, with dark lighting, posh couches, and a big fountain in the middle.

The food was amazing, too, though I might as well have gone to Out of the Pan because I ordered crepes again! Please excuse me for ordering the same kind of stuff again, but I’m indulging myself in as many crepes as possible before I leave because I can’t find any where I live in America!

I ordered a savory crepe:
DSC02919
Roasted chicken, figs compote, tomato, gruyère cheese sauce
DSC02920
I was pleasantly surprised to see the different presentation of this crepe. Instead of being rolled up like a wrap, the filling was scattered on top of the crepe like a pizza, and then sealed along the edges and baked briefly again, so that the whole thing came out big and square-shaped and flat. Cool, huh?
DSC02921
The greens that came on top of it was lightly dressed in some sort of vinaigrette, which I pushed to the side because I don’t really like salad dressings. But the rest?
DSC02925
It was freaking amazing.
DSC02924
Honestly, what can go wrong when you have figs compote in your food? And a rich, creamy layer of gruyère cheese sauce? The figs were so chewy and sweet and sort of caramelized, and went amazing with the smokiness of the cheese and roasted chicken, the juicy tomato, and the eggy crepe.
DSC02928 DSC02926
I think if there was a bit more of that delicious gruyère cheese sauce, this crepe would be better than all the other crepes I’ve had at Out of the Pan. But unfortunately, Canele isn’t as generous as Out of the Pan with their fillings! (Perhaps that explains the different crepe presentation. What a scam!)

Jingwen ordered the Rustic bacon and pea soup:
DSC02912
Bacon and peas with baby corn and caramelized onion in a rich chicken broth
DSC02913
It was…weird. It tasted like an Asian-style French onion soup. If only they left out the baby corn, it would have been quite good. The baby corn ruined the whole dish, and none of us touched it besides a few slurps.

The soup came with these bread:
DSC02918
Sort of dried out, but that’s okay since they’re for dipping in the soup.

Jingwen also ordered a smoked salmon pasta:
DSC02915
Spaghettini sautéed with onion, white wine, cream, smoked salmon and fresh dill.
DSC02916
Fortunately, this one tasted pretty good. The cream wasn’t overbearing, and the smoked salmon was the perfect flavor, not too bland but not too salty.
DSC02917
I’m kind of surprised. When I first came to Singapore, I thought I would be craving local food all the time. But after sampling some of my old favorites, I found myself satisfied with just a taste of them, and now I just crave western food like sandwiches, wraps, pasta, soup, steak, etc! Things I can readily get in America!

And the more surprising thing is, I really really want to sink my teeth into some good Mexican or Middle-eastern food. Which is so weird, because they never really appealed to me when I was in America. I mean, can you believe I’ve never even tried Chipotle?

Part of the reason was because of my eating disorder. I never dared venture to other foods besides my “safe” prepackaged, microwaveable meals from Lean Cuisine or Kashi. But now that I’ve kicked the habit of having to know the exact nutritional information of everything that enters my mouth, I can’t wait to try everything I didn’t allow myself to!

Oh, and the sweet, lovely Katherine from Smoky Mountain Cafe passed me this amazing award!
renee_award[1]
The Renee Award is one of the most meaningful awards in blog world because it honors someone who is incredibly inspirational in her intelligent and witty writing. And by doing so, this award celebrates women’s smart, strong and inspirational spirit! It honors women who spread joy and love like an Acorn……a small package growing into a tall and sturdy oak tree which gives more acorns…………..

Aaaww, I’m so touched and flattered! Thank you so much, Katherine! You’ve been the most wonderful angel to me with all your comforting and encouraging comments.

I would like to pass them down to these other beautiful people:

Megan from Sunshine ‘n Spice
Marta from Just Call Me Marta
Debbie from Oh so Ravenous

This time I managed to withhold myself and stick to only three, so that there are more to pass it forward to!

Have a great week, everyone! I’ll be back from my dinner from Out of the Pan (are you groaning or drooling? Heh heh!)

Question of the day: Is there a certain restaurant you always frequent and can never get sick of? What is it, and what do you usually order?

Congrats on the award! I have never tried a savoury crepe before — I love the sweet ones so much! Hmm, fav restaurant? There’s a Vietnamese place near my house I just love — great food and so cheap!

Aww, I’m really hoping that you get to see Jingwen one more time. :) Fig compote sounds heavenly on top of chicken with gruyere. I’ve been craving some kind of poultry topped with some kind of fruity sauce ever since your turkey/cranberry sandwich!!

My favorite restaurant is a toughie. I don’t think I could ever get sick of this one delicious Turkish restaurant that’s nearby. They serve the softest Turkish bread as appetizer, and I always order some lamb or chicken kebab plate with hummus. :)

More crepes the better. That smoked salmon pasta looks really good. Yum!

I hope you get to meet with your friends before you leave.

I’m sorry tonight was (possibly) your last time with Jingwen for the time being, but I’m glad you got to have some great dinner! Where DO you live back in America, anyway? I didn’t know you did gymnastics! Me too! Well, back in the day…but ya, I’m excited to see your final tour at Out of the Pan!

Congratulations on that award – you truly are such an inpsiration, and beautiful person. I cannot even begin to tell you how much thought I give to your posts, and the challenges you face – and the lessons and benefits you get from all of them – you are incredible. This is yet another post that proves that. I really hope that these last few days aren’t too hard for you, although I know you’re consumed with thoughts about leaving, just remember that it’s not goodbye – these people will ALWAYS be with you, and there’s always a chance to reconnect personally with them again. And about the crepes – order em’ as much as you want girl ;) haha they look delicious.

Okay so, that baby corn would bug me too…who puts baby corn in a soup?! Never seen that one before. Maybe the restaurant will take a hint from you guys since you didn’t eat all that much of it, right?! Haha! You are lovely, and I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself.

Thank you so, so much for passing that award along to me, it means a lot to me, and I really appreciate it. I will post in on my entry tonight.

    Love you!

    Meg

OH and I totally forgot to answer the question!

My favorite restaurant that will probably never get old is Lemongrass – it’s a Thai restaurant and every dish I’ve ever ordered there is just phenomenal…ahh Thai food, yum!

It’s sad that this was your last meeting with your great friend :-( I hate goodbyes.

It seems like your crepe was lovely though! Gruyère cheese sauce sounds delicious. I love cheese oh so much.

That’s funny how you are craving Mexican and Middle-eastern food! Are they hard to find in Singapore?

My favourite restaurant here in Melbourne, Australia is a wonderful place called ‘The Rocks’ which serves the greatest seafood.

For an entree I love one of their platters, my favourite has blackmore wagyu bresaola, fresh figs, spanish valdeon blue, fig vincotto.

As a main, I generally get the whole rainbow trout which is wrapped in vine leaf and served with smoked tomato.

I don’t go that often because it’s pricey, but it is DELICIOUS!

Congratulations on your award, by the way. You do have a great blog. One of my favourites for sure.

Just like you can never get sick of crepes, I don’t think I can get sick of looking at them! There are just too many wonderful creations you can make with them!!

There’s a vegetarian restaurant that I HAVE to go to every time I’m home. They make the best homemade veggie burger I’ve ever had, and I’ve tried a lot of veggie burgers in my day!

Do you really have a hard time finding crepes in the US?!

I get lunch at the same place every day when I’m at work… I’m verrrrrry original (not) and get a salad!!

BTW — where did you get the idea that Israel is more conservative? I don’t think it is, with the exception of certain areas, but they have counterparts everywhere. Besides, I think it was made in the US anyway. ;)

  • Mica // April 30, 2009 at 12:22 pm | Reply

Mmm, if I had a good crêpe restaurant, I would go there all the time!

  • ohsoravenous // April 30, 2009 at 12:33 pm | Reply

Aww! Thanks so much for the award, m’love. I’ll defo post it on my next postie (which might not come for a while, but no worries, I won’t forget!).

Crepes are delish. Feel no shame!

  • ksgoodeats // April 30, 2009 at 12:55 pm | Reply

Definitely eat all the crepes you can get your hands on! There aren’t any here :( Ewww I don’t like baby corn – it’s just so odd to me! For the record, I haven’t tried Chipotle either! Middle Eastern food though = DIVINE!!!

    Congrats on your award!

The crepe looks amazing! I have never had one!!!!!!!!! I want to try making them at home. I can’t believe you haven’t be to Chipotle. It is so yummy. And the ingredients always feel really fresh. I love Mexican. I am a chips and salsa -aholic!

  • 5 Star Foodie // April 30, 2009 at 1:32 pm | Reply

I made a smoked salmon pasta like this the other day at home and it was really good! The crepe is excellent!

  • ellie // April 30, 2009 at 1:39 pm | Reply

crepes are so good! I’ve never been to Chipotle either but am dying to go next time I am in the US! Need me some burrito action (Amy’s is good but I think I need to branch out!)

My favourite restaurant is a diner in New York. It’s pretty standard diner food but they also do a lot of Greek food and the set-up inside is a little fancier than a typical greasy-spoon-type place. I usually get a wrap filled with grilled chicken, feta cheese, lettuce and tomato. I order a side of tzatziki and the combination is just amazing!

  • Lorraine @NotQuiteNigella // April 30, 2009 at 1:58 pm | Reply

hehe Sophia you and your crepes. You are too cute! I agree nothing can go wrong with a fig compote ;)

  • Marta // April 30, 2009 at 2:05 pm | Reply

Sophia, thank you so much! You have moved me to tears with your award… and I don’t cry easy! You have also been inspirational for me and have made an possitive impact in the short time I’ve known you. Reading your blog has made me confront a lot of my issues, and come out and walk on the sunny side of the street. It really helps the healing process because it makes me feel I’m sharing the journey!
OK, that crepe looks amazing! I’m pretty sure I could eat my own weight in figs, and then die a happy death from the digestive consecuences, hahaha, I love them in anything, but especially accompanied with some cheese. The contrast is sublime! I’m glad you get to taste all these yummy things!
My favourite restaurant… uhm, I don’t know, I’m actually not a restaurant-goer. It’s probably because I’m kind of cheap, I just always feel like I can make the same thing at home, for wayyyy cheaper. So, when I do go out, is for foods I never make at home, like sushi. My favourite sushi place is called Sushi on Bloor in Toronto, the have the absolute best rolls, such fresh sashimi and the appetizers are fantastic! I’m a greedy monster when it comes to the nasu dengaku (grilled eggplant with miso glaze) and always ahve two orders! As well as the wakame salad! Oh the brightness of that green!!!!

That crepe does look amazing! Fig compote and gruyere works for me….Also, I LOVE the smoked salmon-cream-dill-pasta combo anytime, anywhere.

The crepe looks great! Well, I guess you’ll be able to look back at the last few weeks in Singapore as your “time of crepes.” Which makes crepes even more special! :)

  • Kim Hooper // April 30, 2009 at 3:12 pm | Reply

Sounds like you have such a good friendship with Jingwen! You did gymnastics? Me too :) I think you’ll have a field day with food back here in the States. There are SO many options. My favorite restaurant is Rutabegorz. There are only 3, all near me. There are massive portions and such variety. I usually start with a cup of soup and get one of their wraps. So yummy!

  • Fearless Kitchen // April 30, 2009 at 3:13 pm | Reply

I love gruyere cheese, so the crepe with the gruyere sauce sounds delicious!

I guess my favorite restaurant would be China Road, back in my hometown. I never get sick of eating there. Of course, I only get the chance two or three times a year :)

  • Reeni // April 30, 2009 at 3:57 pm | Reply

Your crepe looks scrumptious! You should try making them again. I bet with a little experimentation you would be making them like a pro. I always order Fettucine Alfredo from Romanelli’s and the same sandwich and soup from Panera every time.

  • Christina // April 30, 2009 at 4:04 pm | Reply

Holy smokes, those pics look great!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and NO I didn’t taste a difference between baking/microwaving squash. I have always baked it – but had to microwave it the other night b/c it was so late. I was surprised to learn that, but hey! it shaves a lot of time off dinner prep in the future.

  • Anna // April 30, 2009 at 4:46 pm | Reply

I am obsessed with Panera. We don’t have them where I’m from, but here at school there are 3 within walking distance of my house. I always get either the black bean or vegetable soup, a multigrain baguette, and a classic salad. It’s vegan, filling, and most of all, delicious! I highly recommend making a trip there once you get back. And go to Chipotle and try their chips! They are the best tortilla chips ever – they have lime and sea salt on them.

Congrats on the award! You deserve it!

The crepes look fantastic! I am crazy about The Cheesecake Factory, and I can’t go without ordering their lettuce wraps. I know that they have plenty of other delicious items, but the lettuce wraps are a MUST every time!

it must have been sad for you to say goodbye to a good friend.
Congrats on the award, it’s really a cute picture! I like it~~
When I was in Argentina after trying hundreds of restaurants, we (I and bf) ended up going to 3-4 frequently because they’re the best, and they change menu every two weeks. :)

    Grr! I LOVE baby corn!!!

But ANYWAY! I love your eats! All of ‘em! I hope you get to see your friend before you leave for USA. And uhum, I don’t want to sound stupid, but how come you can’t stay in Sinapore? :S
My favorite restaurant is… this little sushi place called “Sushi on 7″. And I NEVER get bored of their food. I always order brown rice vegetable rolls there and seaweed salad AND green tea ice cream ^___________^

Crepes are so heavenly. I’ve actually never had a savory crepe though! Always sweet ones.

Bobby and I go to this Thai place called Blue Mango (in Santa Clara) and I ALWAYS get the mushroom mountain (various mushrooms + soft tofu + baby corn + bean sprouts in this amazingly good but slightly oily sauce). Bobby always get the same thing too – basil chili chicken.

Ahh. Gruyere cheese. And figs. My true love.
Although that salmon looks delicioso, too.

Oh, but a warning about Chipotle: it is VERY Americanized Mexican cuisine. (I actually can’t think of a chain restaurant that cooks good, authentic Mexican food.)
But if that sort of thing doesn’t bother ya, it’s perty dern yummay. =]

Hmm…I definitely never get tired of Flower Flour. It’s an adorable little cafe/flower shop near my house that sells the most delectable desserts and spinach pies. *swoon*
